Today we’d like to introduce you to Omiya Jackson.
Hi Omiya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m here today because I wanted more from life.
By the time I was 25, I’d worked more jobs than I could count on both hands. I was tired of being underpaid & overworked. Being an employee no longer appealed to me or my desired lifestyle. Frustration never went with my outfit so I decided it was time to level up & stop attaching myself to other people’s assignments as a distraction from my own.
2020, was the year I hired myself.
Initially, my mission was to teach audacious businesswomen how to properly package, position, & present their brilliance to the world through Brand Strategy. While I still offer support in this capacity, I find my newer clients are more fascinated by the inevitable self-esteem & social currency boosts of my Personal Styling services. In less than 18 months, the Melanin Playhouse evolved into a holistic & therapeutic space for record-breakers & history makers to become the next-level version of themselves!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say it’s been a smooth road but there are times when it’s quite the opposite. I’m neurodivergent, as many creatives are & I‘ve struggled with ADHD since grade school. Even when the work is easy & the vision is clear, there’s still a lot to learn & do. To-do lists that never get done or clothes that don’t quite make it into the dryer in time can intensify mental & emotional overwhelm.
Another of my greatest challenges has been managing social media. #somebodyhelp! Please know, I’ve interviewed social media managers & even worked with a few so I’m open to receiving support in this area. As a Geriatric Millennial, it can be difficult to keep up with the expectations & demands of being on multiple platforms or even just three while being a mom of 2, wife, & mentor. To combat my woes, you can usually find me hanging out with other elder millennials on Facebook in a support group for people who forgot they even requested access to one.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Thank you. I’ve enjoyed this experience. My sincerest appreciation goes to Kianna Chennault for nominating me & to Dianne Lopez. These ladies have been instrumental in this process.
You asked about what I do: Simply put, as a Transformative Speaker, I encourage audiences to dream bigger & live better. I challenge them to think deeper & more introspectively about what it is they truly want from this life.
Most people aren’t conscious of the energy in their clothing. They aren’t aware of the healing properties & freedom good clothing has so I make it my business to inform them & disrupt those antiquated thought processes daily.
Image is everything. Visuals are everything. As a Brand Stylist, I shift the narrative & perspectives of women who think clothing is superficial. The average woman only covers her body. After I’m done, she’ll know how to DRESS her body to increase her confidence, connections, & commas!
While I typically style & curate wardrobes for service-based rockstars, I’m just as delighted to work with product-based phenoms as well. I don’t put much stock into what a person does for a living. I care more about who he or she is as a person. You could be the CEO of a tech start-up or high-powerd attorney, I’m more concerned with clients who align with my mission, vision, & values more than anything else.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Obedience. Obedience to what GOD has called me to do & the gifts he’s purposed me to serve others with will always be a part of my success story.
Additionally, versatility & resourcefulness are two of my greatest qualities. Being able to creatively solve problems or find on-the-spot solutions that save time or reduce costs is like a sport to me & I love to win! There are many more qualities but being an avid student of my craft cannot be left off the list.
