Meet Bernice Barton of Basically Beautiful in Cobb County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernice Barton.

Bernice, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
This journey really started when I was a little girl growing up in the US Virgin Islands. Majoirty of my family were from the Caribbean, and little girls wearing makeup was frowned upon. I could hear my mother’s voice, “Girl, what are you doing with makeup? Go, take it off now. You too young for that.”  I wasn’t allowed to wear it, so I would sneak around to get into my mother’s cosmetic bag in her bathroom and try to put on mascara or one of her lipsticks. I remember the first time putting on mascara, it smudged all over my eyelids. The lipstick would be all over my teeth, but you couldn’t tell me anything because I knew I looked good. As I got older, I upgraded from mascara and lipstick to eyeshadows, blush, and foundations. My mother was the “Avon Lady” so getting my little hands-on makeup was easy. I would experiment on myself or anyone who would allow me to put makeup on them.

All those experiments on myself and my friends, whether it was a wedding,  photoshoot, performance of stage, a girl’s night out, or Carnivals. Those experiments and experiences made me want to be a makeup artist.

Has it been a smooth road?
This has definitely not been a smooth road at all.  It is more like a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you are excited and hyped to expose yourself, go out and conquer all. But then, the next minute, you are scared and you start to doubt or question yourself, “Am I really ready?” The best way to handle this is to motivate yourself and to push through all these emotions. Everyone’s journey is completely different. You must know your worth and be confident about what you are offering.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Basically Beautiful – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Basically Beautiful is a business that offers cosmetic services for women or men of all ages.  Whether you are preparing to walk down the aisle, a photoshoot, prom, graduation, glams, or editorials, Basically Beautiful offers it all. However, we are really known for Beauty Makeup which is flawless, skin-like, sun-kissed natural makeup.

As a business, I would say I am very proud of how far my team and I have come. We invested a lot of time, effort, sleepless nights, training, and money into this business. Just starting Basically Beautiful was a huge accomplishment.

Even though anyone would say it is another makeup business, everyone in this industry offers something different. Our techniques, our knowledge we’ve gained from trainings or our experiences are different. All those different components equal the same results of making someone feel and look beautiful.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best thing I like about Atlanta, Georgia is that it is a cultural melting pot of Entrepreneurs. Everywhere you turn there is talent! I have been able to meet and work with some of the best Makeup Artists, Photographers, Hair Stylists, Nail Technicians, Models, Rappers including Celebrities thus far. I’m still learning more about this industry because it is a never-ending wealth knowledge and networking. After saying all of that, what can you not like about Atlanta?
