Today we’d like to introduce you to Bijan Nasseri.
Bijan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I went to college at Georgia State University, pursuing a degree in marketing. I never had any interest in photography, but I was always interested in the arts. Fashion and music have always been a key part of my life. Being immersed in the city life, I was inspired to start capturing photos of the cities vibrancy. I started small, taking and editing photos with my iPhone. I got pretty good, which caught the eye of some people over at Wish ATL in Little 5 Points. This led to my first position out of school which was as a marketing intern/lifestyle product photographer at Wish. It was there that I learned how to use proper camera equipment and edit with photoshop. I ended up buying my first camera around that time and the rest was history. Since then I’ve also picked up graphic design and done work for various individuals, agencies and big brands.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been smooth. When you’re mostly self taught, imposter syndrome can be pretty daunting — fake it til you make it really. There have been many instances where I’ve had to learn on the fly or work under less than ideal circumstances. But I believe this makes you stronger and teaches you a lot. Experience really is the best teacher and you have to be willing to take risks to get to the next level.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I actually have held a full time job throughout most of my photography career. Currently I work for Block or more specifically Square, and in the past I have held a few different positions. Some of these include working as a job recruiter, project manager and digital content creator for a mobile accessories company. These opportunities have contributed to the experience I bring to the freelance world.
I would say that I specialize in street photography, fashion and product photography, and overall branding. I think my style helps to bring ouy the soul of a brand. A lot of people come to me because they want a unique perspective, which is something I’ve always been proud of.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
That go-getter mentality. I’ve never been too content with sitting still and I am always looking for ways to be productive—whether that be learning a new skill or sharpening up on a skill I already have. It also helps to put your ego to the side and be comfortable admitting to yourself when you know nothing. That is the best way to grow and learn.
