

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Cook.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cody. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the youngest child of eight children of Reese and Sarah Cook, born and raised in the late 1960’s in the projects of Tobie Grant in a small town called Scottsdale, Ga which is on the out skirts of Atlanta. When I was 10 months old, my father was killed and my mother was left to take care of all eight of us, she worked hard as a cook for different schools in Dekalb County, Ga for over 30 yrs where she later retired. I use to watch how hard my mother worked daily and we were still struggling, don’t get me wrong, I appreciate all my mother done for us, but I could never imagine myself working that hard and making others rich the rest of my life. Later in the mid 1970’s, we moved to Decatur, Ga where I attended Toney Elementary and Columbia High School. I always wanted to own my business and I was great with numbers and money.
When I began my career in the workforce, I had a string of great but unsuccessful jobs such as: Williams Bros. Lumber Company, Marta, General Motors, and Georgia Mortgage and Realty where either I was laid-off or company went out of business. So I decided reflect by on what I was good at in high school (math), what I was great at in college (Business/Accounting) and what I was great at in the work force (Management/Leadership). So I decided to combine those skills and start my own company “Johnson Cooke & Associates”, If you wondering how I come up with this name is my father named my after his two Caucasian friends “Cody and Doug Johnson”. Since 2015, We at Johnson Cooke & Associates have been serving those individuals and small businesses in Stone Mountain and Metro Atlanta Area with their Taxes, Accounting, Payroll, and Notary Public serves. We are the Accounting Firm you can count on.
Has it been a smooth road?
Unfortunately, it hasn’t been an easy road for me. As I mentioned earlier, I went through a string of jobs that were either soon out-of-business or laid-off. In 2007, as the economy and housing market continues to crumble. My career at Georgia Mortgage and Realty as a Loan Officer comes to end and were forced to closed their doors for good like other mortgage companies. As time passed and I had no job and food needed to be put on table and bills came faster (well it seems they came faster), I soon lost everything. Me and my family were forced to live out our vehicle for several months, we washed up at parks and public libraries where we hung-out daily and nightly because we had nowhere to go nor stay (No not even with family members). I felt less than a man because I couldn’t provide for my family and they depended on me, one night (early morning), I cried and prayed and prayed to God and ask him why has my life been this way and I asked him to give me one more chance at life and you know what, He did, and blessed me to get a job in 2009 at Motel 6 (yea I know, not best of jobs but hey I had to feed my family). Later, I became Hotel Assistant Manager and boom outta nowhere we were forced out by new ownership and management. I couldn’t believe I was out of work again, I said to myself enough of this corporate world, I’m starting my own business and I prayed to God and that’s how Johnson Cooke & Associates was formed, our biggest challenge is marketing, but our customers are our biggest asset.

Our owner and CEO, Doug Cook, not only has a MBA degree in Accounting and soon Enrolled Agent with IRS but he has also a Certificate in Tax Preparation and Certificate in Cash Management (Payroll). We don’t require our employees to have a degree or certificate, but they must have the desire to achieve either of the two. Our owner believes in education for his employees so that they are thorough equipped to handle our client’s information. His slogan is “Education Cost Money, But Being Ignorant Cost Even More”!!! Absolutely, I feel and believe that Stone Mountain-Atlanta is a great place to start a business due to the steady continues growth of our city, but small enough for to have face -to-face business contact.
