Meet Decatur Photographer: Yasmin Watts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmin Watts.

Yasmin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Deep down inside when you really love what you do you know its a passion. I started with my son by having my friend Gary take pictures of him for Modeling and Acting and kind of being behind the scenes and directing. I then started borrowing a camera and taking pictures of my friends and family whenever they asked. Then one day my friends convinced me to truly live out my passion and fulfill my dreams. So for Christmas, my boyfriend got me a camera and from there it was full force. I realized that it the people around me can believe in me then I’ve got to believe in myself. There is always that’s fear of failing and people not supporting you, but one thing I learned is that people will be for you and against you, but you never give up.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth road. *Looks around*… no way not at all. I always feared my clients not liking the finished product or people not supporting me. It’s like people know you, but you always have to prove yourself and that’s what I spent the last few months doing. I went through having to prove myself, my work and my worth. I’ve experienced a client not liking my work at one point, I had a party I did once where everything with the camera, the lighting the Wi-Fi could go wrong WENT WRONG. I struggled with editing, in the beginning, it was all a blur. It’s like I have the eye and I can capture the moment, but not that I’m at the finish line I need to bust through the tape. Lol. So definitely not a smooth road, but a learning curve and lesson and I have embraced every moment.

How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up I was very active and sociable. Most people saw me as a tomboy never afraid to try new things and venture out and I was most certainly talkative which would explain my personality. I am very easy going, outgoing and personable.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
My favorite childhood memory would definitely have to be playing basketball. Ball was life back then, but it’s where I first really understood the difference in winning and losing and it doesn’t just apply to sports. I try to always say no matter how many setbacks or how many loss a person may take you’re going to come out on top you’re going to win. It’s about striving for success and truly knowing that no matter what we are all winners.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Thinking about the future keeps me motivated and excited. No matter where I am today, despite how far I’ve gotten I’m going to go far. I’m excited to be branding my name when people hear Yasmin Watts Photography, see it, read about it I want them to draw inspiration not only from the pictures I capture but through my story as well. I want to be an inspiration and a platform for so many other women coming behind me that whatever you set your mind at to just truly go for it. No one gets it right on the first try, but we all have to start somewhere so why not NOW?

Yasmin as your mom I have seen you grow so beyond your thoughts. You see your most strength comes from people not liking your work, those that don’t support your work. It made you go harder and work harder in being better at what you believe in. In life are many challenges and the journey seen rough but as long as you ask God for strength and to guide you along the way no one can block what God has for you. I look at you so full of grace, life with great ambitions. You are amazing and your talent is awesome. God isn’t finish with you yet, there’s more work to be done, goals to be accomplished. Don’t stop, keep moving forward because in the end you and your son will rejoice from the rewards. As your mom I will forever support you and Camden. May each day bring greater joy, hope, love, peace and many blessings. Love Mom

    Yasmin –

I look at you and I’m amazed at your growth over the years. I also look UP to you. I’ve seen you go through the most difficult moments and still stand. One thing I know for certain is that your village is strong and there will never be a day that you aren’t supported by US. Who knew you had such a great talent. Your are blessed with a great skill and you have a way to capture the moments and make them last for the people who experience them. Much love to you sis!
