Today we’d like to introduce you to Diosdado Sima.
Diosdado, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always had an interest for typography and simplistic designs that I would see in different magazines or even album covers. Eventually grew a passion for streetwear. The concept of even wanting a brand started in my college dorm room actually, I was attending Lincoln University (HBCU) in Pennsylvania. Always had love for streetwear. It felt like it was more than just clothes to me the culture behind it always gave me a sense of community, come as you please, wear what you like but most importantly be yourself and comfortable as opposed to higher fashion I felt.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The Journey has definitely been a long road that I’m still learning to be real. Started making clothes as a hobby and was really happy with my close friends supporting to be real, but now I understand that it’s more of a business around and figuring out different marketing ways to appeal your customers, etc. It hasn’t been the smoothest road but I wouldn’t change it for nothing, the journey builds character nothing happens overnight, so I’m here for it. Figuring out the right manufacturers that could bring your vision to life can be an uphill battle and as a designer, it can get oversaturated figuring it out ways to stand out as a brand and for people to take you seriously.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Visionary Society story. Tell us more about the business.
Visionary Society is a lifestyle streetwear brand modeled for motivational purposes. We pick out all materials, cut and sew and create patterns. Our business motto has been moving globally “Father Stretch My Bands “ or simply “FSMB” we all look at it as a motto that in society(world), we truly believe we all relate to it regardless of ethnicity, race or status.
We have a family-oriented style to business that sets us apart from others I feel, we want people to feel at home when they see us. We truly care about society we are working on launching @for.abettersociety, which is basically non-profit side of our brand empowering social entrepreneurs and creatives to fulfill the needs of local and global communities. We feel that we have all the resources in our neighborhoods to build a better society/community just a matter of a guidance and understanding what’s needed. COVID-19 affected a lot of our communities, so that’s been the number one thing in our agenda.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’re very proud to be still in business with everything that’s going on right now to be real it’s a blessing. Proud to have a community behind us supporting us to keep going. But outside of that, we collaboration with Adidas NYC back in December. It was eye-opening to say the least I grew up wearing up on Nike and Adidas, so it was pretty cool.
