Meet Ebony Murphy of Blessed Budgets in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Murphy.

Ebony, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I joined the United States Air Force right out of high school. I was in the military for six years before I became a single parent through divorce. Unfortunately, I went to court three times for custody and divorce proceedings and lost all three cases. Because of my military service, I had to deploy and leave my son with family. Upon my return, I had another court case to attend. I lost this case as well. This case was different however because I lost custody of my son. My son was not even two when I lost custody of him and I was ordered to pay an upward of $1200+ a month in child support.

Additionally, I was then only allowed to have visitation with him one week per month. This tore me to pieces! Because of the high child support, overtime I hit rock bottom and began living out of my car. After two years of visitation, I choose to get out of the military and moved back to the state where my son was to fight for at minimum split custody of him. I won my last case, but it wasn’t easy! I now help women rebuild and plan for the future (and unknown), I help women entrepreneurs start, grow and sustain their businesses all through proper budgeting. My hope is that no other mother will ever have to go through what I endured alone.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh no! First, starting this business because there wasn’t anything like this available at the time of my divorce and custody issues, it was challenging building something so important from scratch. Many of the struggles came from just getting the word out about my services and being a resource to other women who sadly go through what I’ve gone through to some degree.

Blessed Budgets – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My name is Ebony the founder of Blessed Budgets. I’ve gone from sleeping in the back of a Honda to home ownership. While in the military I got divorced and lost custody of my son while ordered to pay over $1000 a month in child support. I now help women rebuild and plan for the future (and unknown), I help women entrepreneurs start, grow and sustain their businesses all through proper budgeting. Two passions of mine are budgeting and seeing people succeed!

I am most proud of seeing strong women leaving have worked with me to foster a solid financial plan for their futures. To have their goals mapped out and the money plan to get them there. It’s been an amazing journey!

What sets me apart from others is that I am a single black woman, veteran that lost and regained custody of her child, went from homeless to homeowner and now business owner. I know what it’s like to be rock bottom and I know how to rebuild and for that, I am humbled to help others do the same!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Proudest moment has been to receive the recognition for my efforts. For other women to tell me how my story inspires them to keep moving forward, it’s been amazing!
