Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Dennis.
Jackie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
With a background in sports, fitness has always been a part of my life; I guess you can say fitness found me. I started teaching traditional aerobic classes in 1987 in Germany for the military community I lived in. My husband and business partner (Coach Patrick) is retired military. I did aerobics to give the army wives a way to de-stress, dance, and have fun. I’ve always love to dance, so aerobics came naturally for me.
After relocating back to the United States in 1991 to Fort Stewart, GA, I starting going to the base gym, where I meet other ladies who enjoyed exercising as much as I did. I learned a lot from them.
In 1994, I moved to Fort Gordon, GA, and that’s where I discovered my passion for health and wellness. I worked as a Wellness Assistant and Personal Trainer at the YMCA until 1998, when I went back to Germany. I returned to Fort Gordon, GA in 2001. After becoming certified as a group exercise instructor, I taught group exercise classes for the military Health and Wellness Center until 2005. During this time, I acquired many certificates for training in health, wellness and nutrition. In 2006, I started Get Fit With Jackie Fitness. I provided group exercise classes at the local community center. Today not only do I provide classes for the community, but I’m an independent Fitness Professional proving employee wellness programs to corporations through contracts. My company is recognized by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a Prevent T2 Program provider for the National Diabetes Prevention Program. I have a radio broadcast called “Health Matters”, which airs every Saturday at 8 am on WAAW Shout 94.7FM. I am a certified American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer and a board member of the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) Certification Board to advance the field of health, wellness, and fitness by developing and maintaining criteria and procedures for conducting valid and reliable national certification programs for fitness professionals. In 2007, I experienced a health challenge; stage zero breast cancer. That’s when I realize this was more than just about exercising and having fun, it was about living, thriving and helping others to live a healthier and more active lifestyle to prevent sickness and disease from attacking your body. This is my calling and I’m very passionate about the assignment God has given me. Through my radio show, speaking engagements, annual wellness expos, and 5K family fun run and walk I inspire those in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) to live healthier and more active lifestyles.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, heath challenge, relationship, and competition in the industry, and location
