Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Killeen.
Hi Jim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Dating back to the early 1900’s, Dr. John J. Killeen (Dr. Jim’s grandfather) made the decision to become a Doctor of Chiropractic after hearing a dramatic testimonial from a patient at the Palmer Chiropractic Clinic in Davenport, Iowa. He managed to save enough money to enroll in the Palmer School of Chiropractic, the “Harvard” of chiropractic education, and then graduated with honors along with the lasting friendship of the founder of the chiropractic profession, B.J. Palmer whom the college was named after. After graduating in 1910, Dr. Killeen was licensed in 1913 to practice and opened his first office in Newburgh, New York where he practiced for 45 years. Historically, it is believed Dr. John was the first licensed Chiropractor in the State of New York back in 1913.
Dr. James T. Killeen, Sr., one of Dr. John’s sons in turn had a tremendous influence on one of his own son, Dr. James T. Killeen, Jr. Dr. Jim, as he is known, is currently a successful third generation practitioner of a family and sports chiropractic clinic located in Alpharetta, Georgia. Dr. Killeen graduated from Rider University with an undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree, and later as Cum Laude Doctor of Chiropractic, along with a Masters Degree in “Sports Chiropractic” from Life University, Marietta Ga. Dr. Jim had been practicing in the same location for the past 25 years.
Dr. Jim states he always felt a strong connection to his family’s “heritage” even as an exuberant youth who excelled in academics and competition on any athletic field. As the grandson and son of noted chiropractors, he believed it was destiny that led him to follow in the footsteps of his ancestry. As a proud Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Jim considers it a rare privilege to be in a profession that allows him the unique opportunity to be of maximum usefulness to GOD and his fellow man. “Combining the love of life, health and spiritual wellness” with an education in the sciences and philosophies of the healing arts, Dr. Killeen, as a seasoned professional, is a true doctor of the future…a doctor’s doctor.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As and any new start-up business there will always be obstacles and challenges. It has been stated and is well known that excellent doctors are not always the greatest businessmen. Fortunately prior to making the decision to enter the health and wellness field I had a successful business career as an entrepreneur. I had to rely heavily on those skills during the first five years of my clinical practice.
The first challenge was to select a geographical area to “route” my new practice. I had to decide a location and community that I wished to serve and live in. I chose Alpharetta, GA where I had been successfully practicing in the same location since 2000. The next major challenge was how to attract new patients in a new location; when you have no money and burdened with significant student debt.
Obviously, I figured that out using good-ole fashioned “grassroots marketing” in this day in age of social media of which I knew nothing about. Our unique sports oriented clinic serving “every athlete in the game of life” is in the process of expanding and thriving as the Center 4 Peak Performance.
We’ve been impressed with Heritage Chiropractic and Wellness Center, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
