Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayra Clouden, Malique Daniels, and Paulette Marte.
As we go through our day to day tasks, we all think about just how much more responsible you have to be the older you get. This realization led Kayra to the thought: ‘How come nobody teaches you how to do this stuff?’. In thinking that, she discovered that you cannot teach the unteachable – there’s no one way to adult; therefore it can’t be taught. So she decided to show it instead.
Prior to jumping on the idea, Kayra had recently graduated from the University of New Haven and skipped her graduation to intern with Lionsgate in France during the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. During this time, Paulette was also skipping her graduation from New York University and interning with Annapurna Pictures where the two met and clicked instantly.
Later that summer back in New York City, the two met up for a film festival in Fort Greene when Paulette asked Kayra, “So, what have you been working on lately?” Surprised by the question because she had spent most of the summer completing her final internship and eating ice cream, Kayra felt the need to affirm that she, too, was a creative and had projects in the works. So she spat out the first idea in her head: ADULTIN’.
Over the next few months, the two developed the idea, wrote scripts, secured a crew, and began to cultivate the web-series. At the time, Kayra was freelancing at Jezebel as an Associate Producer where most of her projects were conducting celebrity interviews – one of which was Ms. Lynn Whitfield.
On the day of this shoot, Ms. Whitfield arrived with her entire team, including Malique, recent graduate of Georgia State University and Atlanta native, who was her social media assistant for the week. Kayra and Malique met on set as Kayra conducted the interview with an Emmy-Award winning Queen. The two were curious about each other’s roles in the entertainment industry so Malique left her business card on the table, which Kayra noticed after the shoot wrapped and followed her on Instagram.
After aimlessly liking each other’s picture for a few days, Kayra slid into the DM’s to find out what she really wanted to know: “How did my good sis end up working with Lynn Whitfield??”, so she invited Malique to lunch to which she said “yes” and the two met up for pizza.
During lunch, Malique revealed that she was in the early phases of developing an idea for a web-series of her own: “Adulting While Black”. Kayra and Malique looked at each other and laughed for about five minutes because right up to this moment, they realized they had every other trait in common, of course, they both had the same idea for a web-series.
At that moment, Malique decided to join Kayra and Paulette in creating ADULTIN’ Series and jumped on the pilot shoot two weeks later.
They’ve been inseparable ever since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The most challenging, yet rewarding, part of this journey has been figuring everything out on our own. With this being our first project together, and our first since each graduating from college, we’ve had to uncover production hurdles, troubleshoot on the fly, and stay proactive for next time all on the spot.
We each come different backgrounds in Production, but are ultimately Producers and have mastered the art of playing on each other’s strengths and weaknesses to make juggling each obstacle easier to overcome.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with ADULTIN’ Series – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our roles as Producers is to make our content as compelling as possible and doing it in a way that relates to our audience. We are known for bringing reality to the screen in a way that is real, authentic and genuine – and we know how to do it through multiple mediums.
ADULTIN’ is an anthology web-series featuring a hybrid of Scripted and Unscripted formats within one episode. The beginning resembles that of a short film with an Unscripted segment beginning right after where we interviewed real young adults about their adulting habits as it relates to Bills, Groceries, Laundry, Sex and their relationship with their Parents.
Conceptualizing reality and turning it into art allows for our content to stand out amongst the others and gives us great pride in knowing that we are able to tell the stories of our community in a way that is fun, creative and true to who we are.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As we grow together, we plan to continue developing and creating each others idea in addition to Producing for others as well. As we go through this process, we’ve been investing time, money and energy into our production value and the overall quality of our work and only plan to get better as we go further.
In the meantime, we look forward to releasing ADULTIN’ Series during the Summer of 2019. We have been working extremely hard to remain accountable and do the work required to bring everyone the best version of this show.
