Thanks for sharing your story with us Lori. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
So growing up, I always had a pool and would watch my dad get it ready every year. Over time, I eventually learned how to do everything myself just by observing and helping out. When quarantine hit, I lost my dad and also began working from home. Just like everyone else, I had more time on my hands than usual and I needed something to keep me busy. I literally woke up one day and decided to clean pools for extra income. I think what pushed the idea was the fact that whenever I would call a pool company to come service mines, they would all say they don’t come out to certain areas. I then took it upon myself to be that person who would service all areas. That same day I posted a flyer on my Instagram with pictures and videos of previous years working on my pool and business has been booming ever since. I decided to name my company after my dad (Guy) to keep his name alive. I must admit that starting this company has been the best thing I could have done because not only is it a hobby I love to do, but it brings me closer to my dad as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Becoming an entrepreneur is definitely a challenge, but you must fall in love with your craft and learn the knicks and knacks of business. I must say it takes patience and lots of practice. Starting off, I thought the only thing I had to do was put water in a pool, but its way more complex than that. One must understand water chemistry, HVAC systems, and so much more, but it all goes hand in hand. Other struggles consisted of finding dependable employees, learning to invest, and time management. What I love most is the transformation from start to finish. I normally make videos of my work and watching the whole edited process within a minute time-frame is rewarding, yet satisfying to say the least. In essence, I must say its a learning process but a lucrative business. I’m looking forward to learning more about my craft and taking things to the next level for sure.
Tell us about your business/company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I mainly specialize in cleaning pools. This can range anywhere from draining, pressure washing, and filling them up to giving the pool a fresh paint job or just monitoring chemicals. I also offer weekly and monthly maintenance plans as well to keep the pools in good swimming conditions. I’m known for my outgoing personality and gregarious attitude. I am most proud of the fact that my turnaround ratio is immaculate. I normally complete immense jobs within two days depending on if there are any outstanding issues such as weather, etc. What sets me apart from others is my professionalism and determination to leave all my customers satisfied. Must I add I am an African-American female, which is rare in this profession.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have invested more into equipment to avoid rental charges and put more thought into developing a team. However, I don’t regret anything. I just consider it as a lesson learned.
