Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsha and Motiere Marshall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marsha and Motiere. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Marshall & Marshall Nonprofit Consulting was inspired by the need to educate nonprofits on true sustainability. Before starting the business, I worked in various roles for different mid – to – large-sized nonprofit organizations. I had a great understanding of what funders expected from organizations submitting grant requests and I worked with several leaders to ensure sustainability of these nonprofits for years to come. However, I saw the lack of such sustainability among smaller nonprofits, particularly those in rural areas or those operated by minorities or serving minority communities.
During a turning point in my life of corporate burnout and seeking a greater purpose, I took a leap of faith to help other organizations achieve the same financial sustainability and success achieved by larger nonprofits. In 2014, M&MNPC was established, but in 2016 I left a full-time Director position to pursue this journey full-time. With my husband as the Co-founder, Marshall & Marshall Nonprofit Consulting was established with the mission to educate and equip new and aspiring nonprofits with the tools and resources needed to impact their communities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with any new journey, there will several obstacles and bumps in the road. So quite naturally, we have endured our fair share of struggles. This journey has definitely not been easy as we have overcome many challenges to include financial barriers, establishing client relationships, and becoming a rising professional in the field of nonprofit management and fundraising, which is typically a space dominated by white males.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Marshall & Marshall Nonprofit Consulting (M&MNPC) is a premier business providing grants management and program evaluation services. More specifically, we offer proposal/grant wring, prospect research, and program evaluation services. Although we have success with grants of all sizes, our specialty is small to mid-size private and foundation grants for nonprofit organizations. We also specialize in completing IRS required documents, including Form 1023, to obtain 501c3 status and Form 990.
Most people associate M&MNPC with grant writing for small and new nonprofits as well as small businesses. Our reach has extended to nonprofit organizations in Georgia as well as the southeastern, northeastern, and western regions of the United States. As a company, we are most proud of the work our clients are able to do because of grant funding they have received. I believe what sets us apart is that we don’t just do the work, but we educate our clients on how to remain sustainable as nonprofits. There is a famous quote that says, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for his lifetime.” Our job is to not just do write grants or conduct evaluations, but it is also our job to educate and equip our clients on how to use these resources to remain sustainable for years to come.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, for me, means completing a goal or a mission, but it is also means acknowledging the milestones achieved along the way. So success doesn’t have to be just one large accomplishment but it can also be incremental. Ultimately every step in a positive direction can be seen as a success because it is another step towards the end goal.
