Meet Monica Montgomery of MCM Editing Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Montgomery.

Hi Monica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My business, MCM Editing Services LLC, started in 2016 as a hobby to use my technical writing skills aside from working my corporate job. My corporate job was in finance but my passion is research and technical writing. The first business service was drafting product manuals to help businesses simplify their business information and also draft resumes and cover letters for friends and associates applying for jobs in their desired career path. That helped keep the business steady for over a year and improve my craft so I decided to expand to include services for grant writing and business plans. Grant writing and business plan development was added since strategy and resolution is exciting for me as it helps to overcome challenges within businesses and organizations. Technical writing involves my passion for research and long-range planning for specified content that is needed for writing proposals and business plans. I continue to improve my talents and learn additional techniques to keep my work unique. My goal is to educate and assist business owners with how to properly structure their business and plan for long-term, profitable growth so by expanding my services toward my target audience has helped tremendously. Six years and counting, I have helped organizations obtain grant funding, stability in operations and audience growth by assessing their challenges and offering solutions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles included marketing, slow build-up of business credit and content writing. Marketing was my biggest challenge since I did not advertise through digital marketing during the first five years of business due to me working my full-time corporate job. At the time, I knew I could not dedicate a lot of time to my clients so majority of my clients came from referrals and returning clients. Once I left my job in March 2022, I focused more on digital marketing which took a different strategy from five years ago and I had to learn new algorithms, keywords for SEO and timelines in order to reach my target audience. It has been a slow growth, but consistency is key.

Business credit was slow since I worked on improving my personal credit first (since it was my personal goal) before extending my business credit past a credit card. I wasn’t using it as often as I should have due to low overhead, but now majority of my spending is for business expenses. All of my monthly business expenses are purchased with my business credit card to help plan for future expansion.

Content writing for my clients is easy, but for myself was difficult. Having an inside-looking out perspective made it harder for me to write my own content so I learned to partner with experts to get my information across to my audience.

We pride ourselves in seeing businesses grow past the first-year mark.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson for me is remaining consistent throughout the journey. Once God shows you the path for your talents, you have to walk that path daily. Stopping along the way causes delays, doubts, stress, missed opportunities and regret. My passion for my business keeps me motivated and pushes me to be consistent in learning new techniques, communicating, networking, creating partnerships and expanding my brand. If I let my emotions hinder my consistency, then I would not be at my growth level, especially during my 6th year in business. Letting my motivation fuel my mindset and control my emotions has led me to remaining consistent throughout this tough journey. Consistency is key!
