Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Sequeira.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Natasha. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I am an Anglo-Portuguese filmmaker from South East India. An avid reader and writer, I began pursuing the entertainment arts as a theatre actor in high-school. Following this, I went on to earn my undergraduate degree, in the study of the nuances of film and television production.
In the months during my internships, my attempts to break into the Kollywood industry seemed futile, as I faced a communication barrier, as I was not well-versed with reading and writing in the local language of Tamil. Post my graduation, I took a year off from filmmaking and delved into copy editing at a children’s educational publishing company.
During this period, I searched hard and long for the ideal grad school, in which to pursue my dreams of being a fully fledged filmmaker. In October 2016, I had the opportunity to visit SCAD Atlanta and instantly fell in love with it. Upon my return to India, I immediately applied to the graduate film program.
In May 2017, I landed an interview with SCAD, and by the grace of God, received an acceptance letter and a dual scholarship. Two years later in this breathtaking city, I am pursuing my passion for all things film, and thriving academically under the guidance and expert counsel of my faculty. I am incredibly blessed and thankful to be here.
Has it been a smooth road?
As an international female film student, the road has been a long and trying one, with new hurdles to cross every day. Having spent all my life in India, with my family, packing my life into two suitcases and moving across the world, was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.
In the first six months, I’d suffered a loss of appetite and extreme homesickness and was all but ready to give up and go home. My faith in God and the incredible friends and family he sent my way to support me, kept me going strong. In 2018, I visited India for my winter break, realized that my passion for film burned too strong to stop me, and headed back to Atlanta to continue my journey, with a renewed sense of purpose.
2018 brought me great joy and blessings in the form of my best friend (now) boyfriend and fellow filmmaker Michael Bolger. It also brought immense grief, with the passing of a close friend, and filmmaker, in unexpected circumstances. All my trial and tribulations have helped me grow through them, and I’m a better woman, leader, and filmmaker for it.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a screenplay writer, film director, and producer. I believe that my mixed heritage, sets me apart, in that I approach situations and make creative decisions, based on my culturally influenced perspectives.
I believe that my creative and critical thinking abilities paired with time management, organization and conflict resolution, have played a large role in my progress.
As of 2019, I have written, directed and produced over 20 short films, music videos, brand films, fashion films, and even a documentary.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I hope to see the film industry in Atlanta grow to an extent where we will be fully equipped with our own Post Production facilities, and will no longer need to depend on LA for those services.
Investment from major network players could potentially play a game-changing role in this aspect.
