Meet Patricia Westervelt of Aroma Essences in North Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Westervelt.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hi! I’m Patricia, a third generation of holistic botanicals. My interest in natural therapies began as a little girl. My mom came stateside from London as a WWII bride in 1945 and eventually settled in Atlanta. She brought with her family recipes from Italy and Burma for any ailment that might befall family and friends. Mom grew organic botanicals in her commercial greenhouse in Atlanta so we all grew up with organic vegetables, herbs, natural remedies, a water garden, glorious flower gardens, Pompeian olive oil and Neroli hydrosol. My job as a kid was watering the greenhouse and I can still remember the smell of that rich, black, damp, beautiful earth brimming with life.

My career in skin care began in 1972 at the Rich’s cosmetics counter in Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, GA. Over the years I earned certifications and licensing as a medical assistant, esthetician and aroma therapist. As a medical assistant, I worked for a dermatologist in Atlanta on Piedmont. Not enough skin so I went back to school so I could perform facials and help heal problematic skin.

With a never-ending passion for learning, I have always had a connection with botanicals and nature. Gradually, I became an adept skin care formulator with a very successful anti-aging skin care line based on essential oils. My skin salon in Suwanee offered facials, micro-current facial toning, aromatherapy and natural skin care lines. This was also a wellness center for pain management with exercise equipment, far infra-red sauna and colon hydrotherapy.

My incredible journey with the Essential Oils started in a way I could never have imagined. From 1997-1999, our daughter was in a horrific automobile accident and one by one, my parents lost their battles with cancer. I remember the pain they were all in. And I could not help. That is what prompted me to turn to Essential Oils. I was thrilled by the breakthroughs people have achieved in their lives using Essential Oils. The deeper I went into the subject, the more hooked I was. Essential Oils are powerful, friendly and gentle facilitators of true healing. They are an important part of what I do for my living. It was during this time that I became certified in dealing with Essential Oils.

Essential Oils became paramount after a lifting incident in 2009 when I severely injured my back. I was in extreme acute pain at that time. Surgery helped some but still the pain. My doctor instructed me to stay in a body brace after surgery for 3 months, months of physical therapy, and I was given several painkillers and muscle relaxants. I took medicines for months and followed the advice of my doctor but still the pain. Nevertheless, my condition never improved. Apart from that, my body just wasn’t responding to the medicines. And still the chronic pain. “Necessity is the mother of invention”, right?

Overnight my mission changed from anti-aging skin care to topical analgesic for chronic pain. Each product is lovingly formulated, blended, decanted and labeled by hand with attention to quality and detail. Everything is made fresh in small batches, using all natural and organic ‘gourmet’ ingredients. This ensures the highest quality product integrity with live plant energy that is bio-available and bio-compatible. Our intention is to offer you a truly spirited, healing natural pain relief product that will make your chronic pain reduced by at least two levels, if not erased.

Nature Always Gives!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Following your passion/mission is not always a smooth highway. Being impatient and not wanting to follow corporate attitudes, rules and corrupt ways was a big deal for me so I turned my back on that life and branched out on my own at an early age. And I never looked back.

Being a single mom with a house weighed heavy on my time, energy and financial resources. But, “tenacity… keeping everlastingly at it brings success” has been a mantra of mine for decades. I’m a firm believer that if you listen, the path will eventually open up in front of you. When the time is right, things happen and fall into place for a reason. The back injury has led me to help more people and with more impact on lives than any eye cream I ever made. It gives a much more rewarding feeling to help ease people’s pain.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Aroma Essences – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My husband and I have been together for 23 years and have had many joint ventures over the years. The biggest was our cabinet shop with custom trim, furniture and cabinets. Michael even had a piece displayed in the Smithsonian. But now, since my back injury, his old football injuries, and just aging in general, we are focusing on the topical analgesic.

I’m the formulator and Michael is the brains behind the scenes. Together, we are reaching out to professional clients as well as individuals who need something more than icy hot or ben gay. Our pain cream contains nutrients that actually help heal soft tissue, connective tissue and hard tissue. This is what sets us apart from all the other OTC pain relievers on the market today. Many people who suffer from chronic pain want to either stop using opioids or want to avoid them altogether and our cream is potent enough to help them fight their pain naturally.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’ll grow the business and maintain our high quality until we officially retire together. Patience is key here since our budget does not allow for television commercials or radio ads. Word of mouth has always been our best avenue.

As natural remedies are discovered, we’ll continue to search for the best pain ingredients that Nature has to offer. Even if our topical analgesic is just part of your pain management program, that means less NSAIDs and less opioid use for many. And that is a very good thing!
