Today we’d like to introduce you to Porscha Dallas.
Porscha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a ‘military brat’ I was exposed to different cultures at an early age. The journey led me to live in Hawaii where the high school I was attending had a television broadcasting class that caught my interest. I fell in love with production and by the time I was a senior, I was managing and co-producing the school’s entire station. While attending the illustrious Clark Atlanta University (CAU), I continued to study production.
During my senior year, I dived into photography for the yearbook. At first, it started out as helping a friend and then I wanted to have a fashion shoot with everyone. After graduating, I moved to Boston and explored architectural and landscape photography. A year later, I went back to Atlanta to get my M.F.A at Savannah College of Art & Design. During this time, my creativity evolved. I began producing/directing/editing music videos for up-and-coming artists, set-designed for multiple short films and took the time to work on my own projects and overcome challenges. Now here we are about ten years later and I still have the same passion for creativity in production as I did when I was a sophomore in high school. I genuinely enjoy the excitement that production brings and being able to convey someone’s story or creative vision accurately is truly gratifying and a blessing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In my experience with production, there are always external issues that you will encounter. You may encounter issues with booking/reserving equipment, gathering people for the crew, or a location backs out, etc. just to name a few. I have adapted to expect the unexpected and ensure that production will always continue despite what obstacle is presented. For example, my lead actor fell ill and instead of calling it a day, my crew and I were able to get other character’s coverage which resulted in a wider array of dynamic shot selections. I have learned that these challenges only make you a better leader, person, and creator. I think Erykah Badu said this best, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive ’bout my shit” so I’m always going to strive to put my best foot forward and provide the best product.
