Today we’d like to introduce you to Sahar Turner.
Hi Sahar, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Nubian Impulse began as a graduation project. It was my goal to start a community newspaper in my area. After graduating high school, my second year of college, I revisited it. My friends all knew me as a performing artist, so it made sense for me to center more of the content around music and media. I noticed a unique need in my city. Much like the stats around the nation, we had very few black-owned publications. What started as ‘The Pryde Press’ newspaper became an online blog/magazine. 5 to 6 years later, we’re still going strong with a beautiful team of writers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing in life worth pursuing is easy. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. During our first annual Nubian Day Parade (www.nubianimpulse.com/parade), we got the approval for our permits, but the city misregistered our route. We had to change the parade route for over 200 performers and art presentations. We pulled it off and remarked the streets but it was a lot of work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a graphic designer, web designer, musician/singer and I also own an online boutique. What sets me apart from others is truly just being my authentic self. I believe when you operate as who you are, everything will be created from your unique perspective. I’m the proudest for simply being consistent. The road to success is never a straight shot but if you stay resilient, you will always win. I kept at it, and over the years the work speaks for itself. I truly enjoy being apart of others’ stories and journeys!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My mom, Diane Daniels (my editorial mentor & writer for the Pittsburgh Courier), Isis Brantley (mentor & godmother), Rosie (assisting editor), and my community and friends who continuously encouraged me to keep going!
