Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Mayo.
Hi Derrick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my clothing brand over 5 years ago. What lead me to following this dream was a coworker of mine told me I couldn’t do it and that I would be working for the company a long time just like everyone else. When I started BlakMagik it was about uplifting black culture. Over time I realized I wanted to do more with my brand and I also began following Christ. That’s when I rebranded BlakMagik it was no more about uplifting black culture but about overcoming adversity. No one has overcome bigger adversity then Jesus Christ and I feel everyone can relate to it some phase of there lives
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. When I was making a lot of money off my brand I was not a disciplined business owner. I would take profits and splurge on clothes, shoes, parting and I quickly learned that is a fast way to run your business into the grown. As I began chasing GOD he has given me e a different vision for my brand. Now BlakMagik has high school athlete influencers, sponsored AAU teams and we have so much more we want to do to give back to the communities with BlakMagik
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m known for being a guy who loves fitness. Often people come up to me all the time about working out and getting into shape. By being in shape I also get to help with brand by being a model. It keeps me grounded and let’s bond and build relationships with other models I use for the brand
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Blakmagik is about pushing through the dark trials we face in our everyday lives and choosing to walk into the light of success by overcoming adversity
Instead of being defeated & giving up you chose to fight & push through that’s the Magik!
We chose to use the lotus flower because it represents strength, resilience, and rebirth. Lotuses rise from the mud without stains. So they can return to the murky water each evening and open their blooms at the break of day
