Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Wilder Baker.

Lisa Wilder Baker

Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
**Lisa Wilder Baker: A Photographer’s Journey**

Born and raised in the vibrant city of London, England, I was the eldest of four in a family where creativity was simply in the air. My dad, the lead singer of the legendary ‘70s group Heatwave, and my mom, a background singer and songwriter, set the stage (quite literally) for a childhood filled with music, artistry, and storytelling.

As a teenager, I found my own creative outlet through photography. I started with film, developing rolls in a darkroom, completely captivated by the process of turning fleeting moments into tangible art. Whether it was candid snapshots of friends or landscapes that spoke to me, I fell in love with the idea that a photograph could not only freeze a memory but tell a story.

Of course, life had its way of pulling me in other directions for a while. I pursued my passion for music, singing and songwriting in a band with my sister, while also navigating the corporate world. But about ten years ago, my camera called me back, and I started taking pictures again—mostly for friends and family at first. What began as a hobby reignited a spark, and before I knew it, this little side passion blossomed into a full-fledged business.

Now, after six years of shooting professionally, I’ve discovered the magic in the types of photography I love most. Family documentary photography and in-home newborn photography hold a special place in my heart. I adore the authenticity of real moments—the laughter, the chaos, the love. There’s something deeply meaningful about capturing a family in their element, creating a visual story that will be cherished for generations. While I also enjoy lifestyle photography, which has a bit more structure and posing, I still aim to keep it natural and playful, especially when working with children (they have the best giggles to capture!).

One of my greatest joys has been encouraging families of color to invest in these forms of photography. There is so much rich history, culture, and emotion to be preserved through these sessions, and I hope to show just how timeless and invaluable these stories can be. That said, I work with all families—because every story deserves to be told, and I genuinely enjoy meeting people from all walks of life.

My approach is simple: I aim to create a warm, friendly, and fun experience from our first conversation to the moment you receive your gallery. I want you to feel relaxed, natural, and—dare I say it—like you’re just hanging out with an old friend who happens to have a camera. I pride myself on adapting to all types of personalities, and I’ve even gained a few lifelong friends through those chance client meetings!

The magic in my work isn’t just in the photos; it’s in the connection. I deeply appreciate people for who they are, and getting to be part of their lives, even for a little while, is a privilege I don’t take lightly. So, whether we’re documenting your family’s everyday moments, celebrating your newborn’s first days, or capturing joyful chaos with the kids, my goal is always the same: to tell your story beautifully and authentically—and to have a lot of fun while doing it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

Building a business is always a journey with its share of challenges, and for me, the toughest part has been finding the time and energy to balance it all. The transition to taking on clients and managing the long hours of editing—while still working full time—has been a balancing act from the start. I currently work as a Development Officer for a global non-profit (a role I truly love!) and simultaneously run my photography business almost full-time.

On top of that, I’m a wife and mom to two energetic little ones, aged 3 and 4. Balancing work, family responsibilities, and my business is a constant juggling act, but it’s a dance I’ve learned to embrace.

Another reality of this business is that photography is *not* an inexpensive passion! Equipment, tools, and training are crucial investments. I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my amazing husband, who has stood by me and helped ensure I have what I need to continuously improve my work and refine my skills.

This journey hasn’t been a sprint—far from it. Building my business has been a slow, steady climb, and I’m deeply grateful for each step of the process. It’s been a rewarding path, one I’m excited to continue as my business continues to grow!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in family documentary photography, in-home newborn photography, and lifestyle sessions—three styles that hold a special place in my heart. These types of experiences go beyond capturing a moment; they tell a story, preserve the beauty of everyday life, and create timeless memories for families. Whether it’s the joyful chaos of your kids playing, the peaceful moments of welcoming a newborn, or the organic interactions of a lifestyle session, I strive to deliver images that feel authentic, warm, and meaningful.

What sets me apart is the care, intention, and FUN I bring to every session. I want families to feel seen and valued, and I aim to create images that will become cherished heirlooms. The experience with me is never rushed or cookie-cutter—Music will be playing and I focus on capturing genuine moments that reflect the love and personality of your family.

I also get a lot of joy from photographing professional headshots. While a bit different from my family sessions, I love the challenge of telling a brief but powerful story about who someone is through a single image. Whether it’s for LinkedIn, a corporate website, or personal branding, my headshots tend to lean toward a more portrait-like style, helping you show up confidently and authentically in your industry.

An experience with me is always relaxed and fun—I want you to feel completely at ease in front of the camera (yes, even if you *think* you’re camera-shy!). – even with fussy little ones, reluctant teenagers and the occasional reluctant spouse (ha!) – I have a way with working through it all,
Lastly, being in the Atlanta area, my British accent has led to more than a few laughs, which often helps break the ice! Ultimately, my goal is to make your session enjoyable and feel like you’re taking pictures with an ‘old friend’.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The COVID-19 crisis taught me so much about the value of intentionally capturing love, memories, and the moments we share with our loved ones. Life slowed down, and I found myself appreciating even the smallest connections more deeply. Personally, I had two babies during the pandemic—an experience both beautiful and challenging. As a photographer, I was fortunate to document those precious early days with my little ones, but I also know many women missed out on opportunities for newborn or maternity photos during that time.

It gave me an even greater appreciation for how important it is to preserve these fleeting, life-changing moments. Whether it’s the arrival of a new baby, a growing bump, or simply the joy of being together, these memories are worth documenting. It’s not just about the photos themselves but the stories they hold and the emotions they bring back when you look at them years later. This time reminded me of just how meaningful it is to create and preserve these memories—for myself and for others.
