Rising Stars: Meet Tyzlah Daniels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyzlah Daniels.

Hi Tyzlah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
While attending the University of West, GA I noticed a lack of beauty products catered towards minority men and women. For the few stores that did sell products for us the prices seemed overpriced (assuming because we had nowhere closer for them to go). By my final year of college, I knew that the school and community was in need of a beauty supply store catered towards minorities. With so many young adults coming from all over to attend the school, I knew I wanted to create something for them a sense of familiarity (having brands they know and love) as well as bringing a sense of community (having someone like myself being the owner and accepting them as they are in all their shapes and forms)

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I faced many struggles and blessings along the way. Early on, I hired someone extremely close to me to help with the buildout of my store paid them half upfront (not knowing any better and also trusting them) and unfortunately the day that was scheduled for buildout, I could not find them. Since I’m not a contractor myself, it pushed my store back two weeks. However, I did learn really fast how to become a DIY-ER so big thanks to YouTube for that one !!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a beauty supply store owner at the age of 23. Although I am not a hairstylist nor a degree in business, I have always prided myself of being business savvy, business just came natural. Growing up, my father was and still is an entrepreneur and so I guess his teaching over the years just stuck with me. What sets me apart from others would defiantly be my age and race (I know that’s a touchy topic but it’s honest and real) American Americans make up less than 5% of beauty supply owners however make up more than 40% of the buyers. So I believe with me being just 23 and African American creating my business in a college town where so many other young adults come, I will stand out the most because I’m truly one of them and I hope to inspire others

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One book that I love that has truly helped me was “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne that book really helped me change my way of thinking and taught me that whatever I want, I am truly able to create. I may not be able to control everything but I am the creator of my own reality.
