Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandy Daniels.
Brandy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have always been passionate about helping others. Even as a child, if I saw someone in need I would come up with strategies to help them, and I was blessed to have parents who supported my ideas. I always knew that I would end up in a profession that involved helping others. While attending Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio I majored in psychology. After graduating, I deferred my acceptance to a clinical psychology program to work at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology. While there I remember attending a conference focused on public health research. This was the moment that I fell in love with the field of public health and decided to re-apply to graduate schools. That decision landed me in Atlanta, GA at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health. Atlanta has been my home since 2004. After I graduated I worked for a year at Emory University and then worked for several years as a contractor on projects funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although I loved public health, something was missing. The type of work that I was doing, in addition to being in a corporate environment was not aligning with my core values or my passion to help others. It felt as though I was far removed from those who were in need of assistance. So as crazy as it sounds, I decided to re-apply to clinical psychology programs. I was accepted to George Washington University. I received my acceptance notification 3 days after discovering my dad was dying from prostate cancer. I remember thinking, “Now what do I do?” I deferred for a year, and less than 2 months later my dad passed away. During that time a good friend and ex-coworker of mine said, “I think you would be a great life coach!” I started to dig deep to learn more about the profession. I am a huge advocate of therapy, but the thing that won me over about life coaching was the solution-focused approach that is used to help move clients forward. So once again, I found myself applying to schools, this time accredited life coaching programs, and I was accepted to the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching.
I am happy to say that I am now a Certified Professional Coach who specializes in life and career transitions. I fall deeper and deeper in love with what I do each day because my clients inspire me in ways that words cannot express.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Certified Professional Coach who specializes in life and career coaching. I have been trained to coach people from all walks of life, but my passion is working with individuals who identify as introverts, or those who possess many characteristics of an introvert. I am a proud introvert! However, I can honestly say it has not always been this way. Growing up as an introvert who was quiet, and enjoyed being by myself was not always easy. Also, working in a corporate environment that celebrated and rewarded the ‘extrovert ideal’ over time had negative effects on my self-esteem and confidence. Over the course of my life, I have often felt misunderstood, and for a while I believed that my voice was not valued. I can honestly say that coaching, along with prayer and meditation truly changed my life.
Coaching empowered me to dig deep and find solutions to many of my challenges related to being an introvert including my fear of public speaking, and my struggles with saying ‘no’ in order to establish healthy boundaries. My goal as a coach is to help my fellow introverts realize their strengths, and embrace who they are so they can confidently navigate through transitions or changes in their career and/or personal life.
Attitudinal Assessments
In addition to coaching sessions, I also offer attitudinal assessments to anyone who is interested in learning about the filters (or perspectives) they have developed, and how those filters are impacting the way they perceive life including stressful events. The assessment is called the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) assessment. The ELI assessment measures your ability to lead people, including yourself, to take positive, productive and sustainable action. It also assesses your level of involvement and engagement regarding your roles and tasks at work and at home. I work with individuals and companies who wish to offer ELI assessments to their employees. I do assessments with all of my clients because being more conscious and aware of our actions and perceptions is the first step to changing them.
Mock Interviews
For those folks who get as nervous as I do about doing job interviews, I offer mock interviews. Mock interviews can last 30-60 minutes based on your preference, with 10 minutes being reserved for feedback and questions. I collaborate with my husband in conducting these interviews. He is extremely skilled at asking tough and thought-provoking behavioral-based interview questions. Mock interviews can be conducted in person or via Skype/Zoom. Our goal is to have the participant walk into an interview feeling confident and prepared to articulate their strengths and areas of development.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
My advice for connecting with like-minded people is to search for events that relate to your interests or passions and attend those events to connect with others. Meetup is a wonderful place to find people with similar interests as you. Also, if meeting in person is not your thing there are virtual groups on Facebook where you can connect with individuals who have the same interests as you. I will be starting groups on both Facebook and Meetup for introverts who dread networking but realize the importance of it, so be on the lookout.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
For those who are interested in receiving life or career coaching, I conduct coaching sessions for individuals, couples or groups either in person, over the phone or via Zoom and Skype. I am a motivational speaker who speaks at conferences, schools and other related organizations or events. Additionally, I conduct in person and virtual workshops on topics such as removing barriers, emotional intelligence, dynamic communication, problem solving, and time management. Finally, I also host vision board parties or what I like to refer to as “parties with a purpose.” These parties involve food, fun, drinks, and an opportunity to connect with others all while being coached around your vision, goals and aspirations for your life.
