Art & Life with KariBeth Gentry

Today we’d like to introduce you to KariBeth Gentry.

KariBeth, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have had a passion for photography since I was in Elementary School when I received my first Polaroid camera. My mom would get so frustrated with me because I would use up all of the *expensive* film so quickly. I took every photography elective that my high school offered, and learned how to develop my own film in the dark room at school. I learned manual shooting on my first Nikon SLR. When I had my first baby, I decided that a digital camera was more feasible to use to capture those precious moments with her; therefore I bought my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T1i. I absolutely loved being able to use my skills to watch her grow up through my lens. After I had my second daughter, and had attended several photography workshops, I started KBG Photography in 2012 to be able to use my talent to provide these memories for other families as well. In 2014, I began specializing in newborns and babies throughout their first year. Those first moments and details are so special to me, and I am so thankful to have the gift to freeze time for these precious families.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I specialize in Newborns and Babies throughout their first year. Most of my work is with newborn babies around 10-14 days old; however, I offer a Baby Plan, which is 3-4 sessions to follow moms and babies from Maternity through the baby’s first birthday. I utilize both in-home (session is held in the client’s home for more of a lifestyle, less-posed feel) and in-studio sessions. In-studio sessions use a mixture of natural and artificial light to capture maternity, newborn, as well as the Sitter and First Birthday milestones. I provide a studio wardrobe as a service to my clients who are either unsure of what to wear, or simply want to wear something beautiful in their photographs that they do not necessarily already have in their own closet.

My style is very simple, pure, and classic. I always suggest that clients wear neutral-colored clothing as it is flattering to all skin tones, and neutral colors help keep the focus on the details of the baby as well as the interaction between family members versus the distraction of bright, bold colors. My goal of every session is to truly capture the details of each baby, their tiny fingers, feet, hair, eyelashes, lips, as well as the love between the parents and their new little precious bundle. Babies don’t keep, and I want their first little details to be remembered forever.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
With the development of social media, especially Facebook and Instagram, getting our work seen has been increasingly easier. However, keeping up with social media outlet’s constantly changing algorithms is a task in itself. Social media has provided a way for artists to have their work seen by people all over the world for little to no cost. This online platform has changed the advertising world for artists.

Atlanta is also great about featuring artists, highlighting the importance of the arts, as well as creating and maintaining beautiful spaces for artists to use such as the Beltway, Piedmont Park, the Botanical Gardens, and other beautiful locations around the city. We are lucky to live in such a city that views artists as vital to the community.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work has been featured on Ever Illuminated (http://www.everilluminated.com/sweet-innocence/). I have also been named as one of the Best Atlanta Newborn Photographers by Expertise for the third year in a row (https://www.expertise.com/ga/atlanta/newborn-photography). One of my images won a Merit Award in the National Association of Professional Childhood Photographers International Image competitions (www.napcp.com). KBG Photography was also voted Best Photographer by Around Acworth Magazine in 2017 (https://aroundacworthmagazine.com/).
