Art & Life with Kiki Gibson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiki Gibson.

Kiki, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always been fascinated with the drums since I was a toddler. I remember asking a teacher if I could play the drumset in the class and I was told that black girls don’t play drums. At that time I was in Kindergarten. Always having this in mind I found other hobbies and outlets, it wasn’t until I entered high school and was misplaced in a music class where I decided to take full advantage of the drumset there. I am mostly self-taught. I am blessed to say, I have been able to play with some really cool artists and to be apart of Jammcard. I’ve been a finalist in the international drumming competition for girls.

I am currently focusing on developing my self as an artist. I am a freelance drummer which means I do not play for one particular band.

Can you give our readers some background on your work as a musician?
I am a drummer. I started out as an independent artist making drum videos and remixes and uploading them to Youtube. In my opinion, it’s the best way for a drummer to expresses themselves. I am free to write and play how I feel the music speaks to me. I hope people take away the joy when they watch me play. I love to play drums, I have so much fun doing so, no matter the stereotype drums are affiliated with. I hope I inspire people to make time to do what they enjoy.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
If they live in Atlanta, they are very fortunate because there is always something going on. Go out and support of the musicians and by doing so, you will run into some very cool people and make the right connections.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I play all over Atlanta. Best way to follow me is through my Instagram.
