Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Watson.
Nicole, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Do you ever feel like something special is going to happen in the near future? You don’t know when it will happen but for sure, it’s coming. My name is Nicole Sakura Watson and I have always had this feeling in my heart. It stays with me and keeps me going. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia. I am a child of two artists, My mother is a visual artist and my father is a musician. There was always something to look at or something to listen to while growing up and by my nature and nurture, I found myself falling in love with music. I remember we had a studio in our basement and artists would come to our home to work on music, and I remember the floor in the living room would thump to the beat.
My earliest memory of singing was hanging from my parent’s bedframe at age 3, singing some made up tune. I felt like star and I still feel this when I imagine my wildest dreams of making a living out of music. I sang whenever I could. Growing up, I don’t remember a time where I wasn’t shy. I was quiet for the most part and whenever you got to know me, I would just bloom right in front of their eyes. But when it came to singing, it was a different story. I’ve always felt that singing was easier than speaking.
I’ve lived in different parts of Georgia, like Douglasville, Atlanta, Rome, Riverdale and when my mother remarried we moved to Lawrenceville in 6th grade. Wherever I went, the music followed. At every school I went to, I was in the choir. It was my home away from home, my first love. My proudest moment was singing Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” at my graduation. Almost four years later, I am studying film and music at Georgia State University, thrilled to follow my dreams.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a singer, songwriter, and producer. I always knew that I wanted to be in the arts but, it took me until my second semester of college to start. About three years ago, I bought a cheap microphone and midi piano on Amazon and I stayed up all night in my dorm room writing love songs, figuring out how to realize what I heard in my head. I write songs for lovers and for myself. There is one thing that I know for sure, and it is that I am a lover. Music is something like medicine to me. I use it to heal my wounds and to make life feel like a dream at any time of the day. My songs make sense of the world I live in. I hope that with my songs, people can find comfort in themselves, trust their hearts, and feel that with love anything is possible.
I write, produce, and sing all of my songs so it’s a labor of love and I still have a lot to learn. Besides being a musician, I am also an amateur photographer and filmmaker.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I think trusting yourself in terms of your artistry is quintessential when it comes to success. Your art is a reflection of who you are and it takes honesty to deliver a body of work that will resonate not only with yourself but with others. I am on a journey of learning and being honest with the person that I am today. Each day is an opportunity to grow into my most authentic self. To me, success is the growth that I’ve experienced in any interval of time. As long as I am honest with myself, growth will come, and so will success.
