Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Leovy.
Ana, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Painting and drawing has always been my favorite activity ever since I was a little girl; however, I never really thought about it as something I could make a living out of.
So, I graduated from Graphic Design and worked on that for a while. I do not regret studying graphic. It has given me so many tools, but I was not really fulfilled and knew I had to give art a shot, so I went all in.
Focused all my energy on creating every day for months, until it became natural.
Slowly it all started coming together, I had a style I really felt comfortable with, and now I can’t imagine doing any other job.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Mexican based artist, I mainly work with acrylics. Passionate about celebrating women and diversity through my work, weaving stories through shapes and colors, inspired by fashion, culture and everyday life. My art intends to represent strong, confident women living in vibrant worlds which are often a fusion between real life and my imagination. I play with the disruption of the human form to reveal my view on both internal and external beauty.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
In the beginning, I had the exact same concerns. I was lucky I didn’t have a family to support and could afford to take the risk.
However, I was still scared, so at the beginning, I was still doing graphic design projects on the side to earn a little extra money. Once I started gaining more confidence in my art, I realized people started liking it more as well.
The starting point was when I decided to step away from what was holding me back, said goodbye to graphic design projects and focused completely on my art.
When doing both things I wasn’t really enjoying any of it, and in a way, it meant I was not trusting I was capable of doing it because I still had a backup.
So I guess it depends on everyone´s situation. But for me it was important to take it seriously as I would with any other new business, dedicating it at least 8 hours a day. Learning, practicing, talking to people and asking for advice (that’s the most important of all).
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
