Today we’d like to introduce you to Logan Simmons.
Logan, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Ten years ago, I was obsessed with taking photos on my little Razor flip phone. I mean, seriously. I’d spend an hour taking photos of raindrops and editing them on that phone. So, for my 13th birthday, I asked for money so I could buy my first “real” camera, never knowing that two years later I’d be shooting my first wedding.
So at 15, that Nikon D3000 captured my first wedding, followed by more weddings and countless senior shoots of my older friends that year. Even though I was catching on quickly, I had no idea what the world of photography and owning a business looked like. I was clueless! I just knew I had this passion and drive to create, but wasn’t sure how to make it official.
As time passed and graduation approached, I knew I wasn’t meant for college. Point blank. I HAD to continue photography…it’s where I belonged. So, I took a “gap year” to see where it went. Took a dive into the industry head first and never looked back. Four years later, here I am – completely booked, loyal clientele, planning for the years to come. This ride has been the most stressful, beautiful, emotional, incredible, eye-opening, life-changing, world-rocking experience……
And it’s just the beginning.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am here to make you feel something. If you aren’t laughing, crying, loving, playing, or dancing like a fool at a session with me…then I haven’t done my job. I believe strongly in the art of capturing raw emotions, not stiff poses.
I’m still working on my craft, but I strive to (at EVERY session) make the client feel like I am their friend, not just some girl we hired to take our photos. I want to be the girl they want to have lunch with, the girl they want to share ideas with, the girl they want to share their story with. I’m honest every time I work with someone. I don’t try to hide my thick southern accent; I am clumsy, I laugh really loud, I tell my clients’ embarrassing stories…I want them to feel right at home when they’re in front of my camera.
I want them to feel confident enough to be themselves…and when they get those photos back, I hope they feel that moment all over again. I want them to say “OH MY GOSH, remember when we had to dance with each other for this one?! Love it!” Not “gosh…that photo is okay, but the pose was so awkward!”
Not everyone is a paid model…so I’m not going to treat them like one. Everyone deserves photos that capture WHO THEY ARE on a daily basis, photos that capture their giggles, kisses, dance moves, tears, and hugs. Realness is key.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
It’s definitely become more difficult for creatives in the past few years, no doubt! The industry is SOOO saturated…and people don’t appreciate the work that comes behind our prices. They just see if it’s cheap or expensive…and that’s so sad! I’ve been taking photos for eight years, and four years professionally. I’ve worked hard to achieve a brand and name for myself, so the best thing to do is appreciate that, and consider the work that is being the pricing.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Instagram is where I’m most active. That’s where you can see updates and my latest work! The website is coming soon, and when it’s live, Instagram will know first. 😉
