Today we’d like to introduce you to Dej Symonè.
Hi Dej Symonè, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a kid, I was always addicted to television; When I got in trouble back then, my consequence was often not being able to go outside rather than having my TV privileges taken away from me Lol. I used to analyze different production sets so much that I used to time out the commercials. I memorize movies and tv shows and picture myself being in them or seeing how I relate a lot to the characters. I used to love shows like Pepper Ann, Rugrats, Doug, Proud Family, recess, as told by ginger, Tiana, Zoey 101, etc. the list goes on and on. My favorite movies were Save the dance, Sister Act 2, Spice World, and Honey. Every time I get a moment where I need an escape or a reminder I always turn on these tv shows/movies. It Helps!
Throughout High School, I really had to figure out how I could make my dreams still happen. I use to sign my signature on the bottom of my high assignments and my teachers always ask me “Ms. *******, why do you always do this? I responded because who knows maybe it’ll be worth something one day” I still had a love for the performing arts and I tried to do other things because I had thought it was so unrealistic of me to think that I would be a star one day. Things like this only happen “Once in a lifetime” But my sophomore year of college at Grand Rapids Community College was when I had picked back up my Ballet classes and I was introduced to TV Broadcasting which is another passion of mine. And it all felt like home.
After three years of college, I transferred over to Wayne State University as a Dance Major and Media Communications minor. During junior year I was introduced to my local University radio channel called WAYNERADIO which was where “OmgoshDejahVu” was born. “Levels” (2018), which she referred to as being like a “breakfast club remake” where she talked about several hot topics and how they relate with our daily lives. From there, the media industry became home. I auditioned for my first film, “Match Made” in 2019 after getting the role and being casted as a supporting actress by the name of Sequoia. I then moved to Atlanta on March 1, 2020 by myself and decided to follow my dreams I was hit with another challenge: PANDEMIC. On March 13th, 2022 The country went on shutdown.
So here I am, stuck after moving to a different state all by myself with no job because of a hiring freeze. Living off my savings, Trying to figure things out. Not knowing that a few months later, they were looking for ladies for “Lyfe Jennings” new comeback song “What”. I was asked to come to the video set. And from there, I connected with a few casting agencies and was featured in Tyler Perry’s comedy film “Madea’s Homecoming” (2022) and The drama-filled series “BMF – Black Mafia Family” on starz as a background extra and now in season 2 of BMF as a featured extra.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most challenging thing I have overcome is the trials and tribulations of life. From depression, suicide, heartbreak, abandonment, fear, and grief. But we all have a stories. I honor where I have been and what I didn’t have because it made me and shaped me into who I am today and most importantly, where I am going. So I stand proud, not thinking that I am better than anyone else but that I am blessed to have discovered myself for myself and by myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional actress, model, media influencer, brand ambassador, podcaster, and freelancer. I specialize in all of these when it comes to entrainment and media. Also, do creative directing when it comes to all of my content as well.
What sets me apart is my me being grounded, humble and the fact that I keep it real and stay true to myself. I stay true to my morals and standards mostly. There aren’t too many people out here that are still like that.
The thing that I am the proudest of right now is just growth and the changes that I see within myself and the just journey as a whole. I have worked with some really great people so far and it’s only the beginning for me. But God has shown me so much in just a few years I cannot wait to see the blessings of success and opportunities that are coming next.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I feel like staying grounded, humble and motivated. And Being embedded in the word of God and sharing that with your supporters. Staying 10 toes down in my dreams and making sure that I put in the work and mix it in with ALOT of faith, you have the perfect recipe for success.
