Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Renee.
Dominique, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was named after a character Dominique Deveraux from my mother’s favorite soap opera “Dynasty.” She was a businesswoman and recording artist; its funny how life imitates art. I was born to be a character; to entertain just by my personality and style. I grew up in the Bronx, always loving music because I could always find a song to relate to or a lyric that describe my exact emotion. I started writing poetry in high school and joined the gospel choir. I knew it was music that touched my soul because I would skip classes just to be in music class all day (at least I was in a classroom lol). I joined a girl group named “Endure,” and still a highlight played “Frenchy” in my high school’s adaptation of “Grease.” After high school, I went straight into college and into the workforce. I spent those years mastering customer service and management. At the peak of my career, I was offered to do a cameo in a web series. The cameo sparked a permanent role in “Night Life” web series which I won “best break out star” at the Urban Web Series Award. When I started acting, the desire to sing and song write came back. I relate back to Dominique Deveraux as she came into the scene and claimed her righteous spot. I followed suit and dropped my first single “Fast Lane” which I wrote myself. I launched my single and video, and I felt like I was on top of the world; a well rounded corporate boss and artist. But life has a way of laughing at your plans; within a few days later I lost my 6 figure corporate job. At the peak of my confidence in my musical ability, I lost myself and fell into depression. It wasn’t t until I found another calling in youth development where I began to find myself again. It was like a rebirth; the kids I empowered gave me inspiration. Therapy gave me the tools to conquer my insecurities and face the fear of starting over. As I matured into the woman I am today, I identify with another character Mary Jane Paul in being Mary Jane the tv show hence my IG name @beingdrenee lol Her character went through heartache, career changes, and tragedy and personal struggles that resulted into her finding her truth. In my current existence in my artistry, it’s all about the transition, the rebirth in my beautiful struggle to stardom; simply just being Dominique Renee.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is my LIFE. PERIOD! My first single “Fast Lane” I put out there about a long love relationship that went nowhere. I proclaimed that “I want it ALL. The love and the FAME”. My art is an autobiography of the inner me, the vulnerability, the struggle I go through. I found that the more I endured; the more creative I become. My emotions are the foundation of my art. I want people to know that this wasn’t an overnight decision for me to do music. It took a lifetime of courage, affirmations, and soul searching. I hope people take away from my music to never give up. I’m a Diva of all trades, but music has been the hardest yet gratifying aspect of my life. It might take a lifetime, but I want people to know that I never gave up on finding my sound; my voice. My legacy will be left as an amazing recording artist.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice for other artist is NEVER GIVE UP! One of my favorite lines from “Unbreakable” by Alicia Keys is “We might have to take a break, but ya’ll know we’ll be back next week saying this love is Unbreakable.” it might take you weeks, months, even years never stop creating! Just believe in yourself like Kanye believes in himself lol The lesson I wished I learned earlier was “Don’t wait for Approval, not everyone will understand your vision, You just need to believe in yourself and go get it done.”
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
As I stated, I’m a Diva of all trades, and I want to inspire and encourage everyone so let me break it down, lol. You can find my music on all musical streaming services. I’m an actress on a popular web series “Nightlife” on YouTube. I’m a co-host on an internet radio show streaming on YOUTUBE/ Ustream and live on DTF radio app called “The Fix Show” every Wednesday 7pm-9pm. I’m always on my IG stories giving beauty product tips and in the process of a joint venture to come out with my own signature all-natural beauty product (stay tuned)!! Lastly, you can find me teaching (etiquette/ leadership) classes to our youth at the Boys and Girls Club located in Astoria, New York.
