Today we’d like to introduce you to Jae Artiste.
Hi Jae, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
PAINT’D Co. began as Painted by Artiste just six years ago. Initially when I started branding myself as Painted byArtiste, it was literally like my own little segment. I would create all kinds of fun looks on myself from playing with lines, colorways, and doing creative looks 100% out of makeup. I used this avenue as my form of self-expression. I grew up an introvert so I wasn’t always the one to speak up for myself or things I knew. When I was alone with my brushes and the looks I created from the heart, made me feel like the biggest elephant in the room even when my voice couldn’t project it. As I started falling more in love with what the things I held inside, created so beautifully, I started to attract attention. Despite this being an avenue for personal coping, I decided to share this part of me with the world, with the women who sought out my services- who sought out my presence for motivation and encouragement. Shortly thereafter, I began services different women in my city for an affordable price. What I appreciated most in becoming the artist was sharing that invigorating feeling that I gained through feeling good with them. I loved the fact that I could have a role in making WHOEVER sit in my chair feel as good as I do, as free as I do, as beautiful as I do. I enjoy bringing out that side of people, that inner goddess and that became my grounds for empowering anyone I met!
My brand was originally established back home in Milwaukee, WI but I relocated and brought my brand to Atlanta, Georgia. Since moving to ATL, I’ve been able to discover more about my own identity and the identity of my brand. Coming to know exactly who and what I wanted of myself and my company has played a key role in where I am today! Today, I am taking my time to actually build a company and in the midst of building I am still able to use my art to reach one’s all around the world- from children to adults. I’d like to say I am where I am today because I was able to recognize that the place I WAS in, was not mine! It wasn’t where I saw my life being any longer and I knew I had the power to change that. This alone has been a HUGE driving force in my artistry and the makeup services I provide to others. I know that I am making a personal connection with anyone I am interacting with- rather in person or virtually. It is more than just doing makeup to me but nurturing and sharing that purity of heart, beautifulness, and confidence and simply helping people feel refreshed when leaving my chair- it has become a true safe space.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been far from easy, far from smooth. In six years, I have had my fair share of discouragement and defeats. Being talented is a competitive market in itself- so I battled with lack of confidence, comparing myself to others and feeling like I wasn’t good enough because of so. I have had my share of choosing the wrong opportunities, not speaking up for myself because I wanted opportunities, allowing people to pressure me into things less than my worth. I have been played out of time, out of money- the list can go on. One of my biggest struggles was just the battle of self, I could honestly say.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a self-taught Makeup Artist. “I specialize in inspiring women to tap into the beauty she holds within in order to appreciate the beauty enhanced in each makeup look.”
I do full-face glam makeovers for clients who book me. Faces can range from soft natural glam to bold dramatic freestyle glam. I have always been crazy about my eye work. My favorite kind of looks to do are creative looks! I love to play with a variety of colors, pigments, cut creases, wings, glitters, rhinestones, pearls, prints, etc. that is what I’m known for- my versatility. My clients like that when they come to my page, they aren’t just seeing one look. A lot of my clients now tell me they appreciate that I am one of the artists who still does colorful eye looks since the evolution of makeup has kind of evolved to that natural, bronzed, celeb glam with soft shadows. I take pride in that! I take pride in being able to stand out as one of the artists.
I also take pride in providing quality services. I like to make sure that I am properly tending to the need of each client’s skin and creating a protecting base so that the skin is never weighed down or irritated.
In fact, I have been working hard on my “Waterproof beats with no waterproof makeup-“ it’s been a blast honestly and my clients love how their makeup lasts them through their toughest nights out.
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t just want to be an artist. I don’t just want to be able to do it- but I take pride in my education behind what I’m doing. My clients know I am always studying and working with products and adjusting my methods to get them the best individually and collectively. I also am very genuine with my clients and I inspire each one of them to love something about themselves that they may not have even recognized as lovable. I have a loyal client now that shared with me, she used to be insecure about taking pictures on one side due to a scar on her face and has gotten her makeup done by me eight times and says she is more confident in ever taking pictures on her scar side, thanks to me. So it isn’t just about getting the makeup done for me, but I literally want everyone to feel beautiful inside and out after they experience PAINT’D Co.
I know how it feels to not feel beautiful inside- so that confidence it’s a feeling no one should miss out on- You resonate differently.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If I could advise anyone just starting out, I would tell them:
“Find your lane and stay in it. In six years, the biggest lesson I missed was being okay with my own journey. At times, I wanted what other people had so bad that the abilities and opportunities I had right in front of me- I missed. Just be you. Make your rules. Make sure you understand your values, standards, and morals, and also the same for your business- just stay true to that. Once I surrendered to my journey, it became fun because it was like me creating my own world of PAINT’D. Get in your zone and create your ideal lifestyle, ideal business, ideal self- and walk in that self everyday. There will be no way you can’t be your best creative self if you do that. Be you..”
I personally wish as time went on that I had invested more time into the vision I had for myself and not the vision everyone else had for me or for makeup artists and general. Now that I am aware, there’s no turning back and it has produced a happier woman today!
