Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Navarro.
Jose, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born and raised in Little Haiti, a town in Miami Florida. I moved to Atlanta 5 years ago to pursue acting. I acted in a few indie films and one network TV show before reverting to my passion for writing. After writing a few screenplays, I took a chance at producing and directing two of them; it was through those experiences that I found my passion for writing and directing. Since this discovery, I have put all my time and any resources to growing a career in film. I currently own two video production companies, one specifically for weddings and another for commercials and film.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My current focus is writing and filming as much as possible. My writing focuses on stories that are deep with meaning and purpose. I find inspiration from other creative minds that have made the leap into following their passions. My goal with every screenplay is to show something true. I hate the idea of watering down reality because it makes people uncomfortable. Truth doesn’t care about your comfort or preference; it exists without your acknowledgment. And in the same energy, I depict truth in my screenplays. My hopes are that after watching one of my films, you feel something you didn’t expect to feel. I hope that the film makes you question things, and discuss uncomfortable realities that the characters of that movie placed in front of you.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I think social media is one of the biggest challenges artists face today. We rely on it to share our art, but it can also distract us from taking risks and pushing forward. I believe that because we innately compare ourselves to people, we follow on social media, we can often become discouraged believing that the path to our passions is too long, or out of reach. For the artist with the proper mindset, this is a tool. But for those insecure folks out here putting our hearts on sheets of paper or canvas, it can be crippling.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You’ll find my two shorts on my YouTube channel. Any time I’m working on a new project I share behind the scenes pieces on my Instagram. If you’d like to collaborate with me on something creative, please don’t hesitate to send me a direct message.
