Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Farrugia.
Hi Katelyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a creative for as long as I can remember, but I’ve been acting for about ten years now. Like many, I found my love of acting in high school but didn’t pursue it full-time until I was out of college. I started in the trenches with indie shorts, working day and night to create anything worth showing to an agent. Now, I’m focused on making my own projects – writing more, honing my own creative voice. I’ve had many successes in my short time, but I’m very excited for what the future could hold.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Here and there, I’ve encountered the same struggles as most actors – a bunch of maybes, a ton of no’s and a lot of heartbreak to get to the successes I’ve enjoyed. But lately, I’m learning to enjoy the struggle, embracing it for what it is – dues. And we all have to pay them. No one is immune. Once you realize that, you’ll find the road a little easier to walk.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a film and television actress working primarily in the southeast. I’d say I’m best known for my work in Misfits and Monsters, The Staircase and NCIS: New Orleans. I’ve had the privilege of working with the best crews from the southeast and LA, and some of the best actors. I guess if I had to choose, I’m most proud of the journey I’ve had. I know that sounds cliche, but it’s true. I’m still working towards being an actor full-time, but damn, it’s been a fun ride. I’ve had ups and downs along the way, yet I’ve learned I’m really adept at medieval weaponry, an apprentice dialect teacher, and finally owning who I am as a person. I started gardening, went to my first Nascar race, might start an embroidery business, or maybe wood burning signs (it is so satisfying). These are the things that make me a great actress – living life, learning from it. If you haven’t tried it lately, it’s a blast! Seriously.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
The best advice I can give is to trust your gut. We meet people all the time in my industry, either on the job or trying to get a job – a friend of a friend situation. I just recently made an acquaintance on set who I know I’ll be reaching out to collaborate with on projects. But I also met people on set I wouldn’t want to work with. I think the goal in any networking arena, but especially in acting, is to be genuine, trust your instincts and don’t follow the shining, bouncing ball. Get off your phone! Read a book, or spark a conversation with a fun question – if you could retire anywhere, where would it be? Make connections with people and the network will build on its own.
