Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsea Johnson.
Hi Kelsea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, thank you so much. Well, I started out thinking I was going to be a high-powered corporate attorney— as it turns out, my passion lied elsewhere. I was about to finish my senior year of undergrad at UGA when I realized my love of making people feel beautiful was overpowering my want for the legally blonde life. So in December of 2018, I received my Bachelors in Political Science and soon after began planning on how I could create a life and career built on my love of beauty. Today I am a full-time freelance makeup artist getting to do what I love each and every day. I work with hundreds of women from across the globe, empowering them through finding their true beauty! Boudoir, bridal, and special event makeup are where my heart lies because I get to bring out and enhance natural facial features!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting your own business is never easy, but it is absolutely rewarding. I am constantly hustling for clients, trying to get my name out there through word of mouth, wedding venues, event planners, etc. and sometimes it feels like I’m never doing enough and could always be grinding harder. Plus, when you jump headfirst into a new industry, you want to be the best you have to put your time in, find your niche, and create community involvement. Getting to where you want to be in your career is always an uphill climb!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in natural soft glam makeup for the effortless bride to be or badass boudoir babe. I love enhancing a person’s natural features through makeup and giving them the confidence to shake up a room! Daily, I work with a boudoir photographer where I get to create original looks on a multitude of different women! We have flown across the US to Hawaii, California, Arizona, and Florida to give women the experience of feeling like their best self! In my work, my favorite aspects are foundation shade matching and eyebrow enhancing. Your makeup always looks flawless when it matches your neck! And the eyebrows create the shape of the face so if they are too harsh it can make for a really heavy brow!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned that life is precious. The most interesting and important lesson I learned from this entire chapter of our lives is that life is precious. At the end of the day, I want to be doing something that brings me joy, gives me time to spend with my family and friends, and live a life that is centered around joy and kindness. Through my art, I am able to do all of those things and I am so grateful my business was able to not only withstand but thrive during such an unstable time.
