Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Savage.
Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up watching the wonder years as a kid. So I’ve had the acting bug since I was Young. In 2002 I was cast as Seymour in a Christian rendition of little shop of horrors at my church. The response and energy I received from the audience was amazing, and that’s when I knew I wanted to pursue acting professionally. After doing community theater for almost ten years, I knew television and film was where I wanted to be. But as great as a Philadelphia is in the arts, I knew I had to seek elsewhere to get the opportunities I needed. New York, Atlanta and LA were my three choices. New York was great but I wanted to get away. LA was the next option but I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t want to be too far from home If things didn’t work out. Atlanta was where I needed to be. After frequenting the city for two years, In September 2013, I packed my things up, got on the road and headed there. Things begin happening pretty quickly. After being in Atlanta for only a month, I was hired as a stand-in for Actor Jay Ellis on The Game. That opportunity ultimately leads to a speaking role. Shortly after, I signed with the Aligned Stars agency and that’s when my career began to take off. Eight years later and 20 credits under my belt, I’m just getting started.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There were many struggles along the way. I’d taken a huge financial hit when I moved to Atlanta. I left a job making almost $23.00 an hour to working at Big Papa’s Pizza in Buckhead making $2.00 an hour. Though there wasn’t much money to be made, the hours were great because I could still pursue acting and my boss Jimmy was awesome. He truly encouraged me to pursue my dreams even though it meant eventually leaving. I started working for Lyft because the pizza shop just wasn’t cutting it. There were plenty of times I didn’t know how I was going to pay my rent, but God saw me through every month. He knew that I’m pursuing my dream was based upon my faith in him so he never forget about me!!!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional actor and I’ve been cast in productions such as House of Cards, Yours Worst Nightmare, The Originals, The Underground Railroad, Insecure and many more. I’m most known for the role of Terrance Berry’s on the BET series The Quad. I’m most proud of my work on Lovecraft Country along with Jonathan Majors as his superior. The steaks were high and the intensity level was insane but I’m truly proud of myself for staying focused and being confident enough to have great scene.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Being spiritual, humble and grateful are the three most important qualities that I believe has helped me reach this level of success. When I’m spiritually in tune, It helps me see things differently which allows me to make better decisions. It also helps me to place things in the right perspective while strengthening… My spirituality also helps me to stay humble. They work hand-in-hand because ultimately I know where my blessings come from, Which leads me to being grateful. When you can appreciate the highs and the lows and have a space of gratitude, it opens up doors of endless possibilities.
