Check Out LaTashia Perry’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTashia Perry.

Hi LaTashia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After my daughter was teased about her naturally curly hair in her all-white ballet class, I wrote my first book, “Hair Like Mine” to help affirm and celebrate her differences, the things that made her unique and beautiful.

I then set out on a journey to create more books and products celebrating natural hair and brown skin. Books, dolls, puzzles, apparel, backpacks and more. Empowering Kids Through Positive Self Images.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
After releasing Hair Like Mine, I saw great success with sales. I believe this was due to not just having a beautiful book but also because I created something there was a huge need for. But of course, there were obstacles. There were people who criticized my work because I didn’t have diverse characters.

I have also struggled to find a literary agent who can help take me to the next level. I am currently still seeking one who specifically represents children’s book authors.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the owner of Kids Like Mine. A brand created to empower black and brown kids to feel comfortable in their skin.

I’m the author of six books. I also have a mobile bookstore.

I am mostly known for my big curly hair and poetic style books that I write affirming children. I have had huge success with my title Skin Like Mine. It has been featured on several major sites including Good Morning America and People Magazine.

I believe what sets me apart from others is my writing style. My books are more like poetry with pictures to go along with them.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be authentic! In the era of social media, it’s so easy to see what others are doing and see the success they are having and get tempted to copy.

Be you! The world needs who you were made to be. There is someone out there waiting for you to use (your) gift to help them.

Know your strengths But don’t be afraid to reach out for help.
