Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Georgia.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Owner and operator of Rollin’ with the Homies ATL. I am originally from the suburbs of South Jersey. Taking myself back to my school days, we were kids who prided ourselves in after school activities. From the bikes to skates, and really anything on wheels… Let’s just say if you were rollin’, you were a top-notch 4th grader. As time went by I felt as though we lost hold of that. Getting older, kids weren’t as interested in things that weren’t deemed as “cool” anymore. Rollin with the homies was designed to take us back to our adolescent days and show our kids growing up today that positive outlets for fun in our communities can never go out of style. I believe that by doing so, we have an opportunity to show kids that there is an endless amount of things they can do right before they go wrong. Together, we can make a difference.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have certainly been some struggles along the way while creating Rollin with the Homies. When I first decided on the idea, I wanted to learn how to skate. I saw all the videos on Instagram and thought to myself, “I can do this!”. What better way to do learn how to do something new than starting a skate club and include others like me? It can’t be that difficult. Little did I know a lot of doubt was casted on me within that time. I had family members and friends saying things like “What are you going to do if no one shows up” “Why start a skate club if you don’t know how to skate?” “That’s good for you, but I won’t be coming”. On the weeks approaching my first event, I thought to myself, maybe they’re right. So, with all of that being said what can I do to ensure the presence of the people? I deceived to provide free food and drinks, free raffles, swag bags, merchandise for sale at a low price, music, the works. By 1 week before my event, I had 60 RSVP’s on Eventbrite. Approaching the day of with a total of 81 people confirmed to show. So at this point, if no one showed up it would be doing me a huge favor because WOW! I was not expecting that.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wasn’t confident in making such an imperative decision straight out of school so, instead I decided to use this time to figure it out. I had left New Jersey and moved to Washington, DC at a young age with my sister who had dreams of opening a food truck. By the time 2015 came around, we were two minority sisters who opened the first gelato truck in DC; taking over the market one scoop at a time. In the midst of it all, I embarked on a journey to Cosmetology School. Operating a food truck by day and cosmetology school by night was no joke but it certainly prepared me for the work I had ahead. I am most proud of my ability to easily adapt to any situation at such a young age. I later realized that my ability to be agile in every phase of my life, never allowing fear to stop me from where I wanted to go next is what sets me apart from others.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style”. This is one of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou. I believe that anyone on a mission should find their own passion in these words. It’s been a pleasure VoyageATL, thank you for your time blessings to you all!
