Today we’d like to introduce you to Sitch.
Hi Sitch, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a singer, dancer, and entertainer from Fayetteville, NC. I started singing as a kid in my church’s choir when I was eight and was in chorus, Honors Chorus, went to governor’s school, etc. all through grade school. In 2015, I started producing and releasing original music, adopting the “Sitch” pseudonym in 2019. Now, I am an emerging independent artist with a self-produced album (“LaJane Doe”), a recent EP (“In Other News”), music videos, at least 100 performances under my belt, and a LOT more in the works.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building to where I am now has definitely had its challenges. It is a constant discovery of finding gigs, then finding *paid* gigs, getting content out in a social media-driven world, building an audience, all that. I started my “Sitch” journey in a showcase community that leaned more toward rap and hip-hop. As an R&B/Pop-Soul singer, it was interesting navigating that scene and feeling like I could fit in; eventually, I found my footing and things started taking off. Now, I’ve given myself the challenge of starting graduate school. THE STRUGGLE of juggling work, school, and music – that road is one I’m just gonna trust the GPS on…
Because TIME. WHO has the TIME? How do you manage such a thing?! Story at 11. Stay tuned.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an R&B/Pop-Soul singer, dancer, visual artist, and entertainer. I make music that ranges from slow and vibey, to deep and balladic, to hype and upbeat. I love music that makes you move and lyrics that make you think. I’m known for bringing an unrivaled energy to the stage when I perform, and I’m proud of the fact that the more I grow into my space, the more authentically I present myself on stage and through my art.
Creatively, I try to broaden what it means to be an artist, particularly a Black, queer male artist. I share messages of vulnerability, empowerment, I expand my own range of self-expression, and honestly I just try to have fun. One of my staples is that I always wear jerseys branded with my name, my number 12, and the Newsroom – which is what I call my village/supporters – when I perform. People come to my shows and know I’m going to have the team on my back. The village mentality is very important to me so I think that trademark will stick around for a while.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that you can’t deny quality. If something is great, it’s great. When you see a dope performer, even if their music isn’t your favorite genre, you can’t say they didn’t put on a show. If a song is produced well, lyrics are on point, and it REALLY hits, you just can’t deny that it’s a good song. That has helped me immensely when I perform at a new venue or for a new audience, release new music, or work on new content – even if the audiences don’t leave “obsessed” with my material, it definitely isn’t going to be because that material sucked!
A huge part of that confidence is Authenticity, as I’ve mentioned before. It was true for me that the more I committed to discovering myself and growing in my life, the more that growth reflected in my music. People want to feel connected to their artists, and my people want to relate. I want to be a high-quality artist who shows up every time.
