Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Burgess.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am originally from Nashville, Tennessee. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Hampton University in 2001 and a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University in 2002. I have lived here in Atlanta for over 20 years now. By day, I am a public health consultant. By night, I am an actress, writer, and producer. In August 2016, I released my first children’s book, “Skin Like Mine”. “Skin Like Mine” was well received and featured in the February 2017 issue of Essence magazine. A few years later, I released my second book, The Adventures of Junior and Baby Brother: Spencer’s Special Gift. Though I love writing books that inspire children, I also enjoy screenwriting. I am one-third of the film production company, Tyler Street Films. My partners, Jack Manning, III and Lawrence Watford, are Hampton University alums as well. Our films include Flipped Short Film, Catharsis, and Skin Like Mine Animated Short Film, which is produced in conjunction with actor Stanley Aughtry, another Hampton University alum. In 2019, I launched my acting career through the Premier Actors’ Network under Dwayne Boyd. Since being signed to the People Store Agency that same year, I have appeared in short films, commercials, and comedic skits.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think time management can be difficult. I wear many hats and have a lot of responsibilities so I have to manage my time wisely. I often set reminders in my phone and make “to-do” lists to stay on top of my daily tasks.
I also advise that anyone who wants to act and/or write get used to rejection. It comes with the territory. You really can’t take it personally. You just have to keep pushing and believe that your time will come.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think the fact that I have managed to maintain a successful career in corporate America while exploring many creative outlets sets me apart from others. I enjoy using both sides of my brain. As a public health professional, I get to use more of my left side—research and evaluation. As a writer and actress, I get to use the right side. It’s the best of both worlds in my humble opinion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I won’t say anything has been due to luck. I will say it has all been due to God and his favor. I work hard at everything that I do. Sometimes I fail. Sometimes I succeed. It is all a part of his divine plan for my life.
