Today we’d like to introduce you to Vandissa Brown.
Hi Vandissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As early as grade school I can remember being overly excited about things like Lisa Frank stickers and new folders. Now that paper appreciation has somehow become a happy and sustainable revenue stream.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The toughest part has been me getting in my own way! I tend to suffer from imposter syndrome pretty consistently. Too often, I tell myself I can’t do something or nobody will respond to a piece, and I am almost always proven wrong. When I step ahead of that fear and just put my work out there, I feel the love radiated back towards me.
Other than that, there is a learning curve. Paper quality, new programs, cutting machines. There’s always something new to learn how to operate or master. Quite possibly the best part for me. Now that paper appreciation has somehow become a happy and sustainable source or creativity, freedom, and income.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create digital and physical stickers, bookmarks, magnets, and stationery for Black planner girls worldwide.
I am most known for my Recipe Journal Sticker Bundle. I shared a couple of videos on YouTube of me using the stickers in my own Recipe Journal and I am consistently making new friends through it. It’s so wonderful because my own friends just aren’t into that sort of thing.
The current product I am most proud of is the Incoming Baby Sticker Bundle. I use it myself in my own baby’s albums but it’s also useful for those who are currently pregnant. It’s a minimal way of journaling through their pregnancy, and women are able to see themselves in my illustrations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Growing up I considered myself to be an unlucky person. It was actually the catalyst for the start (and name) of my blog. If I hadn’t been so willing to share my cynicism though, I likely would have never arrived here today, sharing my designs. The friends I made blogging, were the ones who encouraged me to start in the first place. Unlucky? No such thing.
