Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelton Hawkins Jr.
Hi Shelton, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up style and fashion was always one of my underlining interest. I was never intrigued by following trends. I always looked to do my own thing essentially. I would say I started dipping my foot into making clothes at around 12. I would basically reconstruct, distress, and bleach any old piece of clothes that I wasn’t wearing anymore and try to make something else that I actually would wear.
I started a t-shirt line in 8th grade it was called “Kings Clothing” that continued in a sort of on and off manner until high school. I decided that I was dead set on making clothes, and after a lot of personal growth I felt like my clothes, design style, and overall brand should grow as well. I grew into what is now Étrange Studios. A brand that combines luxury garments with the urban “streetwear” style that I’ve grown so accustomed to.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say overall things have gone smoothly. My biggest struggle recently has been trying to find different ways to network and reach broader audiences with my craft, especially now during the pandemic.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When it comes to my work I would say I pay the most attention to the quality, & originality of my pieces. Right now I’m am planning a runway style fashion show where my avant-garde style pieces as well as my haute couture, & streetwear pieces will be displayed, & available for purchase. I believe that I specialize in ground breaking garments. What sets me apart is that I’m never looking to follow trends or waves with my designs. My designs are the wave.
