Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Bufford.
Hi Alana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Before I became a floral designer, I was a long-time flower enthusiast. I absolutely love flowers and loved receiving them but I was not a fan of how they were arranged, so I would go pick out my own flowers every week and arrange them. I would post them on Instagram every week and a couple of people would send me dms and asked how they could purchase and then the light bulb went off and the rest was history!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it’s been smooth, but that’s because I took my time to learn. I freelanced and learned the how before I just jumped into my own thing and it paid and is paying off. I have an amazing mentor and an amazing network of other Black Girl Florists that I can lean on. One of my two biggest struggles would have to be setting my prices and not feeling bad and getting in my own way. Imposter syndrome is so real!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe that Covid changed the mindsets of so many people. We are taking more time to celebrate the moments and in grand ways. I definitely see people having more events. Also in the past, I don’t believe people really saw the magnitude flowers had on an event and how flowers could make an event space. Thanks to social media, people are able to see the process now and the pictures of the finished product. They see the difference and are including florals in the planning of their events and it’s only going to continue to elevate.
