Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Beasley.
Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Though I was never a “sports kid” lifting & fitness has been a part of my life since I was a teenager. I used to go to our local YMCA with my dad where I can remember benching just the empty barbell. From there I continued lifting as a regular habit and became more focused on barbells specifically in college when I decided to compete in my first powerlifting meet. Already a personal trainer at this point, I was beginning to teach more women in my community – both clients & friends – how to lift with barbells. So many women were about that side of the gym and it was so amazing to see how uplifting it was for them to spend their time there! It began to feel in touch with my calling to teach as many women as possible how strong they could be.
I initially started an iteration of the Women’s Barbell Club in Nashville in 2018, then migrated it to Atlanta the following year. The rest is history!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I will say we’ve been extremely lucky to work with (& continue to work with) some really amazing people, so in that context: it has been a smooth road! On the other hand, entrepreneurship is inherently not a “smooth” road. Having to roll with the regular punches of everyday business on top of pivoting for a global pandemic was a unique challenge, but we feel grateful to have been able to still support our community through these struggles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Atlanta Women’s Barbell Club?
Atlanta Women’s Barbell Club’s goal is to build a supportive, diverse, and safe community of women who are driven to grow stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally.
To accomplish this, we bring groups of women together a few times each week for a strength training class revolving around barbells. We are exclusively a coaching club, meaning an experienced strength coach will have eyes on every working set of the members to perform and direct oversight into each member’s programming. Workouts are pre-written for our members, as programming is specifically based upon effective strength training protocols.
We believe in providing effective coaching in order to guarantee quality results for our members.
Fostering a positive environment is important to us so members can come to our sessions expecting awesomeness and laughter alongside their hard work.
We always aim to create a genuine connection between members, allowing women to inspire and embolden one another in a way that translates from the gym to their everyday life.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I’ve learned so many things in working with our amazing community! Most importantly, I’ve learned to believe in and support our client’s personal autonomy (allowing them to set their own goals & processes) and self-sufficiency (allowing them to achieve those goals & stumble as needed). Watching both of these aspects grow in our clients – along with their physical strength – is amazing.
