Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Norris.
Hi Allison, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a dental hygienist by profession but I no longer practice clinically. Very early in my career, one of my sales reps at a dental pharmaceutical company asked me to launch a program they were starting. I spearheaded the launch for the Southeast while training the dentists and specialists. The relationships I built led to my consulting career. I consulted with business administrators and coached hygiene teams. I decided to leave clinical dentistry and took a job with a dental billing company where I could work from home to be with my youngest child. I approached the CEO of the company and suggested they develop a consulting division. He directed me to the COO and we worked closely to develop the consulting division together.
Shortly after, I was introduced to an orthodontist who was launching an orthodontic startup company. I successfully helped develop and launch the company in Georgia as the Director of Development. During my time at the startup, I was “unintentionally recruiting talented dental professionals.” I say unintentional because I didn’t realize that what I was actually really great at would become my future. I didn’t realize that my passion wasn’t for profit but for people and that’s how The Dentele Group, LLC began. The Dentele Group, LLC is a niche concierge recruiting agency. I place top talent dental professionals in nonclinical positions. Most dental recruiters are trying to keep dental professionals in clinical positions but I am giving them the opportunity to find their passion and future.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been good. Of course, in every industry, there are always naysayers or people that have zero clue what you’re doing and judge. I never realized how cutthroat the industry was until I was actually in it. I have had several people try to take advantage of my naivity. Recruiters can make excellent income and with money comes greed.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Dentele Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I place dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants in positions outside of the dental office. Dentistry is a tough industry to be in. It is hard on your body, hard on your mind. Dental hygienists and assistants are undervalued and underpaid. Not only is it taxing on the mind and body, the majority of dental professionals are programmed to think that is all they will ever be able to do. I give them a way out. The candidates I place are amazing and top talent in the dental industry. I am very selective with my candidates because they are a direct reflection of me. Each time I receive a new resume it’s a thrill.
I am accepting new clients. I believe in building relationships with potential clients so they can expect to chat over video during our first meeting. Nothing formal and there’s a very good chance one of my children will pop up at some point during our call!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I am more than happy to mentor anyone that is interested in recruiting but I will not share ALL my secrets. In terms of networking, if you aren’t on LinkedIn, you’re missing out. Do not be afraid to call or send a quick message via LinkedIn to the CEO of a company. They are human, don’t be intimidated and be yourself. They will appreciate your candidness. My husband jokes all the time and says, “what CEO have you talked to today?”
