Today we’d like to introduce you to Gisel Castillo.
Hi Gisel, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Never did I imagine that I would be making herbal infused healing products and holding space for others at my very own healing circles. At the start of my healing journey, I switched over to all natural products, from the toothpaste I used to beauty products and deodorant, shampoo and other skin and hair treatments. I came to a point in my life where I was doing my best to continue school, work, find my path and help my mom who was dealing with a variety of health issues. As I was transitioning into a more holistic lifestyle, I was also trying to bring my mom along the ride. Just before she started getting worse, I was inspired to make my own products and share them with her.
Growing up, I watched my mom dry her own herbs and burn them around the house to cleanse it and make her own different herbal teas and brews. I remember she would peel an orange like a spiral and hang the peel around this small prosperity altar she had. As a child, I had no idea what she was doing but while I played outside, I started mixing up flowers, dirt, grass, and a dash of water to make my own “medicines”, soups and brews and that’s where my story begins.
When I started digging deeper into my healing journey, I realized handcrafting healing products is something I had been doing all along and it was my mom who was my greatest inspiration. She transitioned just a few months before I hit my first year of making the choice to sell the products I was making. Here we are eight years later, and I am still handcrafting all organic, natural healing products and sharing my healing journey at the healing circles I offer.
The passion to share a variety of healing tools with young women and women came from working at different mentoring programs throughout my college years. This type of work really feeds my soul. I got to work at a children’s homeless shelter and started hosting healing workshops for the teen girls on my off days. I knew then just how important this type of work was when I would watch the girls change right before my eyes. A handful were really inspired to heal through the trauma they endured. I had only wished that I had someone guide me through the trauma I was experiencing as a young adult. I remember attending my very first Sister Circle as an adult and that changed everything for me. I was on a mission to expand what I started in every way possible realizing Gisel’s Harmony was more than just products.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been free-flowing. Some days it’s great, it’s expanding, growing and blooming and other times it’s rough and discouraging. At the end of the day, it’s about consistency, it’s about not giving up, it’s about the bigger picture of the legacy I am creating. It’s beyond me and what I can make or what I can offer. It’s about the impact I am making on mama earth and how it changes the world one person at a time.
On this path, I play the role of every single aspect of this business from crafting, labeling, marketing, budgeting, designing and building a site, all of which I have zero experience in, but I’ve learned a lot along the way. I love handcrafting products but everything else is challenging for me, yet they need to get done. Maybe I should have gone to school for it but that was not my passion. My passion was learning about herbs and the many ways they can heal us and helping others help themselves.
So, was this a smooth road to where I am now eight years later? Absolutely not but I am here to fully embrace this path and I’m excited to see where it takes me.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
This year I have taken a huge step forward in my business and have created more time and space for bookings. I have been expanding my product collection and adding more services to my site. With that being said, I am creating some opportunities for those that are interested in holistic healing but are also knowledgeable about marketing, branding, building websites, social media management and creating content.
