Today we’d like to introduce you to Latiqua Williams.
Hi Latiqua, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Providence, Rhode Island Native who shares my tragedy to triumph life story with courage and dignity.
Stricken by childhood abuse, homelessness, and teen pregnancy, passing down my young life destitution to my three sons was not an option. So, during the winter of 1998, I made an executive decision to relocate to the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia, to raise my sons in a more positive and opportunistic environment for Black boys. At the time, I packed my two heartbeats in my 1990 Nissan Maxima with my last $20, and with the support of family and friends, I set out on my new journey. Not knowing the outcome, I knew my life had a purpose.
Over the years, I could have easily chosen pity. However, I decided to be a powerful force and help women and men turn their pain into power by writing my first book. She Did Single Parenting in Heels, which is sold on Amazon. First, I had to believe in myself, and the only possible way was to entrust GOD, wholely, with my life. Then, I saw my life’s purpose.
As I became more focused on the creator of all things, I was able to set balance and boundaries in place for Tiqua and “Mommy.” My heightened self-care led me to solace in the beauty industry, and I became a licensed master cosmetologist. Even in survival mode, I loved to wear red or pink lipstick in my previous life. I knew I was beautiful, but I never washed off the mud from past trauma to see the diamond in the rough. Over the past 20 years, I have become more and more fascinated with the transformation of beauty, cosmetics, and encouraging others to transform their lives. With everything that could define me, my ugly years were the building block to my success in the beauty business.
Like many start-up businesses, my first years were a struggle. Until I got my first five-figure gig which afforded me to travel and train overseas in the beauty industry, I was determined to make my dream come true. And this came with the sacrifice of moving my sons and me into the salon to make ends meet. Making the best of the situation, I began to pamper my children with the same services I offered my clients; hydro-facials, massages, and pedicures. Today, my sons understand the importance of maintaining self-care and the positive impact on their well-being.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a single mom of three was not an easy feat, especially when having an athletic baby boy. After completing my contract overseas, so many more hair transplant opportunities became available to me. Some even required me to be present in New York, Oklahoma, Utah, Maine, or even Canada within a 24-36hr timeframe. To ‘secure the bag,’ I had to leave my baby boy with his coaches so that his education nor athletics would be interrupted, and ‘mommy could go to work.’ This was a challenge for my son and me; at that time, he just saw it as mom was not present or mom missed a game. I thank God he understands my decisions today and how such choices reflect the life he and I live today. And genuinely grateful to those coaches and their families for helping my son and me along the way.
