Community Highlights: Meet Latoya Walker of Pretty Lavish Aesthetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Walker.

Hi Latoya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey doing my own makeup, I started getting compliments and my friends and family started asking me to do their makeup for special occasions. I wanted to learn more so I attended Gwynnis Mosby Makeup Academy and started working in the industry immediately. I’ve worked fashion shows, charity events and also had the opportunity to work with Nikki Minaj’s mom and Snoop Dogg’s mom, may she rest in peace. I’ve freelanced for a few years and noticed a lot of my client’s skin needed attention as well and I wanted to be able to provide that so I went to school to get my esthetician license at International School of Skin Nails and Massage Therapy.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Well, I’m originally from Warner Robins, GA and come from a military family, my mom moved to Atlanta but wasn’t able to raise my siblings and I. I ended up in foster care, so I had to learn pretty quickly on how to keep myself up, so I started babysitting and braiding hair to take care of myself. After graduating my plans were to enlist in the army and become a nurse, but Instead I served six years in the army national guard as a Human Resource Specialist and dropped out of nursing school. I had my first born son in my early 20’s so began to work in corporate America , I’ve always knew whatever path I took it would be some form of customer service and I never stopped believing in myself so I kept going knowing that my passion would find me. My love for makeup started early on but noticed that I was beautifying everyone around me , whether it was me applying makeup or making a product recommendation. My road wasn’t smooth but I stayed the course and I believe everything happened exactly how it was supposed to when it was supposed to and I’m looking forward to the road ahead.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pretty Lavish Aesthetics LLC is where beauty and serenity meet. My top priority for my clients is to get to build a relationship with them, getting to know what their skin concerns are while providing results and an experience, so Pretty Lavish Aesthetics is definitely a place to come where you could receive a 24k gold facial, makeup, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, chemical peels, sugaring hair removal, enzyme peels, radio frequency treatments, all while being in pure relaxation. Pretty Lavish Aesthetics LLC is located in Jonesboro, GA which is south of Atlanta and I want people to know that you don’t have to travel into the city to receive excellent customer service and amazing results. When you walk in you will feel that your session will be all about you with a greeting of aromatherapy and a welcome sign with your name on it.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Well, I started with a virtual mentor in the beginning, who was very helpful as far as getting me to think about what it was I wanted to do and what services I wanted to offer, so yes, I believe a mentor will be impactful to one’s career all while helping them navigate through their journey. I’ll advise any entrepreneur to look into someone they look up to and who’s also in the same field and reach out to them and don’t be afraid to ask if they would be able to mentor and if not, what advice would they give them starting on their journey that they wish they’ve had starting out. As far as networking, I would say just get out there. I would advise to get more into the community and not hesitate to hand out your business cards, attend events that your clients would go and also patronize some other small businesses.
