Community Highlights: Meet Oluchukwu Jennifer Odunze of St’Claire Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oluchukwu Jennifer Odunze.

Hi Oluchukwu Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my business in 2020 during the lockdown. It was out of necessity because I wore a lot of wigs and wasn’t taking care of my hair and didn’t notice I was balding on time until it was quite late. I had baldness in the centre of my scalp. I remember I got depressed about it, I started looking for treatment especially organic/herbal treatment for baldness. I started taking vitamins that could help but it wasn’t working fast enough for me. So I studied and researched herbs and oils that would help with the regrowth of the balded spot on my hair.

I made my first product and used it on my hair. The result was amazing! I noticed the baldness was filling back up. I gave a few of my friends and coworkers to try it out and the result was amazing as well. It was their testimony that made me more convinced that my oil works.

Afterward, encouragement began pouring in for me to start it as a business. I remember when I was growing up in Nigeria, my dad would always tell me to think about starting a business. Initially, I never wanted a business, but when I saw my close friends having their own businesses, I was motivated to start mine.

I just graduated from Esthetician school and looking forward to taking my state board exams and becoming a licensed esthetician.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The obstacles/ challenges I faced were the initial capital to start my business and a lack of knowledge about how to start or operate a profitable business, I had to learn about marketing, how to use Ads on social media to promote my business, built my first website myself and getting the website functional.

My initial capital was about $5000, just to make sure I got all the ingredients I needed. With constant research, I found myself buying more. The great reviews I get from my clients have been tremendous, recently,

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
St’Claire Beauty was created in June 2020, I specialize in making hair growth products such as Chebe hair growth oil and Herbal skin care products such as Turmeric Body butter.

Talking about my products, Chebe is the hair secret of an African ethnic group in Chad. They are known to have very long naturally coarse hair that famously grows past their rear end. Their hair growth oil is made from natural cold-pressed oils, herbs and essential oils that can penetrate deep down into the hair shafts to grow healthy hair by filling in bald areas. It also thickens thinning hair and stops the shedding of hair too.

I took a break from my job to focus on my business. It’s been worth it. Since growing in this business, I get my inspiration from female Bosses around me mostly Black and African women who are going after their dreams. In the days of our parents, our mothers gave up something to make their marriage work, such as their careers.

At the moment, I get most of my orders in the US and Canada. My store is open to everyone regardless of location. So, I am learning the in and out of owning a business and hope to be established in Africa mostly in the Nigerian market. I would like to have my products on shelves in different stores worldwide.

I would say that what sets my brand apart from other brands is my commitment to making products that work by constantly unlearning and relearning to better the products I make. to thrive on making my customers happy and being reachable to each of my customers for custom orders through their purchase of retail or wholesale orders.

I am so proud of my milestone in business and so expectant of what the future holds for St’Claire Beauty. Also working to build a holistic facial spa after I get my license as a licensed esthetician.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I would say, I watch a lot of skincare, hair care, and marketing videos to help increase my knowledge to boost my business and career.
