Community Highlights: Meet Tiffany Hale Carter of Created by Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Hale Carter

Hi Tiffany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I accidentally discovered the field of interior design! I’d already completed a B.A. at the University of Alabama and had opened an event planning business. As my events were getting larger, I thought it would be beneficial to take a few space planning classes. On a whim, I applied to SCAD (I had never heard of the school beforehand) and was accepted. I quickly realized my love for art and design. I decided to close my event planning business to focus completely on interior design. I went on to earn a B.A. and Master of Interior Design at Brenau University. While completing my thesis project, I started researching something called “biophilia”. I learned about the science of biophilia and the importance of designing spaces using its elements and principles. Upon graduation, I briefly worked in the corporate world, but I knew I wanted more from my new career. I made the very difficult and frightening decision to open my own design firm dedicated to using biophilic design to positively impact the overall health and well-being of my clients. Since that time, my firm has been recognized for our contribution to the interior design industry. I feel like we’re just getting started, and I can’t wait to see what the universe has in store for Created by Carter!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been lots of struggles along the unique journey of being a Black female entrepreneur. It’s the main reason why I didn’t want to open my own firm in the first place. I knew it was going to be extremely challenging. However, when the door won’t open, you have to get your own wood and build your own damn door! I can honestly write a book about all of the struggles I’ve experienced, but you can probably guess what they were and still are. How many Black female interior designers do you see on national television or published in mainstream magazines? My focus is to keep doing the work that I feel comes from within me. I have many goals, and I am going to accomplish them no matter the obstacles.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Created by Carter?
Created by Carter is a full-service interior design firm committed to healthy and beautiful interiors. We offer a wide range of services to ensure an indoor space is functional, safe and contributes to the overall well-being of the folks inside it. With Covid, people are spending more time than ever inside, so our specialty of biophilic design is perfect for ensuring those spaces are wholly beneficial. You may be asking yourself, “What is biophilic design?” Without getting too technical, it’s essentially the science of using elements of nature to create healing indoor environments. Whether we realize it or not, we are impacted greatly by our interior surroundings. Created by Carter’s mission is to always create stunning interiors that are healthy, environmentally conscious and long lasting. We have also developed a line of handprinted fabrics with germ-repelling technology. We very excited about its upcoming release because the fabrics can be used in any space from doctor offices to your living room. And, they are gorgeous, if I don’t say so myself!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’ve always been a high-energy person. I am the youngest of four children and the only girl. As you might imagine, I was strong-willed, very loud and a complete tomboy! I was outgoing and would get in trouble a lot in school for talking too much. However, I had lots of friends and was no stranger to adventure. I also made excellent grades and was offered the opportunity to move up a grade level (I declined). I was always really artistic as well. I would write poetry, songs and create choreography to go along with some of my favorites (I could always convince a friend to do the choreography with me!). On the other hand, I would also have moments where I would literally stay in my room to read all day.
