Community Highlights: Meet Tory Keit of Oasis Community Foundation

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tory Keit.

Hi Tory, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m an American writer, artist, poet, and author of the novel Letters Back Home. I started out pursuing one of my passions, spoken word. My unique tone shines through in my poetry and other literary works, which explore the importance we place on love, life, and community. I’m a father, nonprofit leader, and public speaker as well. I speak on improving under-served communities and the importance of youth financial literacy.

I can usually be found laughing with a group of strangers, as laughter is my icebreaker to make new friends at local events. Strengthening our communities is a top priority in my community-related efforts. Having a familiar face has been my key to success with garnering support and participation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Many have faced a fair share of challenges during the pandemic. For example, during Covid, we were inside, impacting public speaking events, book signings, and booked performances. Adjusting to the new normal meant going virtual and diving into social media feet first.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Oasis Community Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit established in Marietta, Georgia. We aim to assist in removing the enduring elements that may hinder the advancement of education and financial literacy. Our initiatives are critical items needed, in all communities, to ensure our communities have the tools to develop, advance, and grow.

The Oasis Community Foundation started with a simple goal. We wanted to make a positive impact by moving our communities forward in community-defined areas. In the beginning, the most significant task was determining how to accomplish this. We are passionate about the success of others and that resources are available to foster said wins. So, I decided we needed to speak with the community and ask them what they thought was required.

We began by talking to the community at large. We spoke to everyone I encountered in my usual advocations instead of targeted focus groups. We approached people directly, at local parks and events, about what was needed in the community while standing in line at local small business shops. Our social media network also provided feedback. Everyone we encountered was happy and willing to offer feedback and advice.

After going through the letters, emails, and notebooks we would carry, we sorted the feedback into broad categories to determine the most talked about items. The input indicated a need for supplies in our teacher’s classrooms and financial literacy. Now that we had identified critical needs, program development began.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
