Conversations with Crystal Kearney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Kearney.

Hi Crystal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m 32 years old, I’m a single mother of two autism sons, it started out when my oldest was two years old. I knew something wasn’t quite right, I got him tested for autism and ADHD and the doctor gave me the diagnosis from there the journey started and I had to learn and teach myself what Autism was. When I had my 2nd son, his development in learning was delayed as well. I got him tested when he was three years old because he was still talking baby talk and wasn’t sounding out words or using simple sentences. I got him tested for autism as well and the same doctor gave me the diagnosis. My world came tumbling down because here I am not 1 but 2 sons with special needs. I knew I had to pray and be the best mom I can be to my sons. It’s still a challenge and I share my story on my social media and I know my story will help someone along the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The struggle is doing it all on your own, no father figure in the home, I have my mother’s help, thank goodness I have her when I need a break or help with the boys. I do everything, doctor appointments, speech, occupational therapy, I do it all as a single mom, IEP meetings, virtual learning online helping my sons is the area that they are weak in. I get the question asked, “How Do I Do it? Or how am I so strong”. I tell friends, parents that I meet, mom that are going through the same thing I’m going through and don’t know what to do or who to turn to… but what I try to do to relax and ease my mind because you can get overwhelmed and stressed out, so I do meditation, relaxing, play jazz music, write poetry having “ME” time when the kids are sleeping. You gotta make time for yourself through the mist of everything.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Being a mother to my two amazing sons, I’m trying to spread the word of autism because it’s not being talked about. Do you have some parents who get the diagnoses that their children have special needs and they don’t know who to turn to talk about it so I am here to share my story and I hope and pray that my story will help someone along the way?

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I love to talk about autism because it’s a part of my life is my world I live in a breed it. So I’m going to keep sharing the word about what I’m doing and prayerfully this year I want to start a podcast about it. And I want to connect with other people in network with other people to bring awareness.
