Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Morris.
Erika, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started making custom shirts about 2 years ago using a cricut machine. I learned what I could from watching YouTube videos. After much consideration and many family and friends encouraging me to pursue it further, I decided to take a Screen Printing Course with Kolormatrix. The class was three days long and after the course, I was extremely motivated and interested in starting my own screen printing business. I spoke with my parents who also believed in my dream and my work ethic and they decided to invest into me and Kreation Junkie. One month later, I got my business license, equipment and Kreation Junkie started to come to life.
It’s incredible the things we can learn on Youtube, and then to start a business based on that knowledge is a testament to the very special time we’re living in. Surely there must have been some challenges though?
The biggest challenge about starting a screen-printing business is that there are so many screen printing companies competing for business. You have to build a clientele that knows your work and will refer you to others. I am still in the first year of starting my business and there are challenges, but you can’t let that deter you from going for your goal. I realized that the screen printing business is very male-dominated. It was a challenge that made me more motivated to succeed in this business. Stay focused on your end goal and remember that setbacks are just a set up for a comeback.
What should we know about Kreation Junkie? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Kreation Junkie is a custom apparel screen printing company. We specialize in screen printing garments of all kinds. We are the Apparel Addicts because we are addicted to creating unique and affordable apparel for our clients. We are a service-first company. We believe in the highest quality of customer service. What sets us apart is our commitment to producing quality apparel at an affordable cost.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Many of the industry leaders in screen printing are males. They also have a large supporting cast that includes many women who help manage and keep their shops running at full capacity. I think in the next 5 to 10 years, we are going to see a rise in female-owned screen printing shops. I would love to be apart of that shift in the screen printing industry.
